TOPIC:ISSUE 38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
WORDS:668 TIME:120mins DATE:2006-1-2
Outline:
1 television can impart and disseminate temporal and new events more rapidly than books In the political realm, the citizens could understand the political proceedings as soon as possible by watching television broadcasting.
2 in the business field, consumers could know the necessary information about the products by the advertisements on TV
3 books are far more portable than television sets and main approach for most people to gain knowledge in their primary time, and cultivate good reading habits
4 the controllers of the television stations always withhold some information from audiences but books do not.
Which is the better way for people's learning-by watching television or by reading books? It might be tempting to agree with the speaker on the fact that television have some advantages over books in certain respects, however, a far more compelling argument can be made that people earn their essential knowledge and experience mostly by reading books. In my view, I concede that both watching television and reading books, on balance, are the interdependent mediums for people's study in the modern era.
Turn first to the speaker's statement on the fundament that people can learn much news and information from television programs. Admittedly, televisions, including videos, play an indispensable role in imparting and conveying the temporal, new political events, beautiful scenes of nature. films and entertainment programs or even advertisements. It is indisputable that televisions surpassed books in terms of lively photographs, accurate documents and higher speed of transmitting messages. Their functions are especially manifest in the politics and business. On the one hand, people can learn the latest political issues that affect their daily lives as soon as possible by the television broadcasting. The transparent and convincing broadcasting of political proceedings such as elections, debates, meetings contributes to the increase of residents' participation into the discussion of politics. The more the citizens' concerning on the government's policies, the more democratic the politics is. Besides, a foresight politician can make his or her political ideals and strategies known for all the citizens around the country or people throughout the world by giving a wonderful speech on television broadcasting.
On the other hand, consumers could punctually acquire the direction or information about products from advertisements on televisions. Obviously, the televised advertisements provide such attractive photographs and comprehensive demonstrations that lead the customers to make decisions for their purchase immediately. What is more, common sense informs us that the best approach for business firms to ascend their reputations is to advertise their products on the prime time of television programs but not rote magazines or newspapers. Therefore, when it comes to political activities or advertisement campaign, televisions have some merits that cannot be substituted by books or other literal documents.
Nevertheless, in the modern society books continuously have great impacts on people's routine lives. Reading books is the preference for people to obtain prominent and valuable skills and information. Most individuals, perhaps all the individuals, gain their knowledge and develop their intelligence by reading textbooks or reference in their primary steps of life. Nobody would believe that Charles Townes---the 2005 Nobel Prize winner earn his knowledge mainly from television sets. Particularly, good reading habit will contributes to one's whole life not only by benefiting them knowledge and experience but also cultivating their good tempers and attitudes toward studying. However, how about televisions? We see their shortages from many complaints by current parents that there are so many violations and eroticism on the television programs that abet their children to crime.
Turn to the final argument against the speaker's allegation. Comparing to the small volume and portability of books, televisions are too large and electricity-cost to serve travelers. They need batteries, scanning-monitor, electrical wires, and large space to put them down while books do not. Moreover, the managers and owners of television stations always withhold some information from the public audience, and thereby maximizing their profits. The excessive commercial instructions and entertainments such as talk shows, films, or matches lead to the consequence that the views cannot receive the useful and objective information from TV programs. Comparatively, when you are browsing through a library or a bookstore, you can find the necessary knowledge rapidly and completely.
In sum, as the two important medias, televisions and books strongly and respectively influence people's lives. Televisions are superior in disseminating the temporal and new events to people by the moving imageries. While books have several advantages in portion, complete information containing, cultivating good reading habits ad developing people's intelligence. They can be existing spontaneously without any exclusion, moreover, they can compensate mutually in people's learning process.
