What do scandals function for common people? Some people asserts that the purpose of scandals is to caution us what we almost neglect, while others claim that it is a mere waste to pay attention to scandals. However, in my point of view, scandals act as a two-edged sword. In particular time, they inform us something important as they do certain harm to us in other periods.

With the startling information explosion in the worldwide scale and the increasingly busy daily schedule for common people, in all likelihood populace neglect important affairs happening just around themselves. It is scandal in every aspect of mundane life to call for our attention. When it comes to political area, the significance of scandal is inimitable. Consider political scandal such as Watergate. Only through scandals published by media can people in general find the fact that Nixon covered his primary role in the whole Watergate affair. After the dissemination of scandal in the public, electorates recognized Nixon can not be their political leader any more because he put his own financial interest above the interest of common people and the whole nation. This example vividly illustrates that the public willingness can direct the progress of politics by the hand of the supervision of scandals. Not only on the level of politics but for the societal evolvement as well, scandal plays a key factor. Consider scandals of Enron collapse, Americans always have a pride for individualism. Only after media exposed the downfall of Enron, once the biggest energy company in America, did the whole society realize the fatal failing of undue individualism.

While scandals in deed do good to society, they also impose obvious harm on community. Common sense tells us that scandals can arrive at common people through the channel of public media. To some extent, media is a pure business so that their final objective is to maximize their profits, and media are familiar with attitude of mundane people who would like to see the straits of powerful man such as political leaders and business moguls. In order to satisfy the appetite of common people media publish all the scandals they can search. However many of scandals have no use for the development of society, they only take up the cherished time of the public and waste their money. One needs to look further than the sex scandal of Cliton which attracted our attention for long time. Did the scandal bring about good to us? Certainly no. It is possible for each man to commit this kind of faults. If the hero is not our former president, could anyone pay attention for such thing?

Certain scandals not only squander people attention but affect adolescents badly. As we know, children are the future of our world and they take indispensable responsibilities of evolvement of nation. When they are so immature that they are unable to discern what is helpful, they just imitate adults whom they respect. When they are conscious that one of their idols for example basketball player or prominent actors are drug user, they will doubtless think drug is good for themselves and perhaps become addictive to drug. Therefore, certain scandals do harm to adolescents.

In the final analysis, every coin has two sides and scandals are no exception. Scandals caution us to take care of certain societal problems as they take up our energy and money. Common people should be aware of which kind of scandals to pay attention to and which parts to overlook. Only by doing so can we actually take advantage of scandal rather than misleading by scandals
