With the advent of the era of television, people do read less. However, it does not mean that reading books is not important as it once was and neither can it be replaced by watching television as the speaker asserted.

It is undeniable that watching television is advantageous to reading books in some aspects. On one hand, watching the television is a way to entertain and relax ourselves. When we turn on the TV, plenty of information just keeps on coming out of it, timely news about accidents happened a few hours ago, weather report around Christmas and so on. That is out of the reach of reading books most of which can never keep up with time. On the other hand, I think most of us prefer the colorful pictures, beautiful scenes and vivid characters of the TV series adopted by a novel rather than reading it. In my case, reading long and boring novels help me get asleep. The reasons why television has become a necessity for every family are as above.

However, as we known, what people see from the channels is decided by TV stations which are under the government's control to some extent. As to the public, what they can do is switch between the channels. That is to say, the knowledge people can get from the television is limited and passively accepted. Educators suggest that children should spend less time in front of TV for it can damage their health and kill their imaginations and curiosity about knowledge. I think the role that books play in education is irreplaceable. Also it is impossible for one to search for the piece of news that had been broadcasted long ago. Whereas, with a library card we can get to know what ever we want from those books.

Without books, there will be no bibliophiles. Without books, we can never enjoy the masterpieces of litterateurs. Without books, we can never have a silent afternoon tea alone. Without books, we will have much less joyfulness in our lives. To sum up, when it comes to different knowledge, we can learn it in different ways.
