Issue 10
"Governments must ensure that their major cities receive the financial support they need in order to thrive, because it is primarily in cities that a nation's cultural traditions are preserved and generated."
According to the speaker, major cities should receive the financial support which they need to thrive because the cultural traditions of a nation are primarily preserved and generated in cities. However, I do not approve of this assertion for two reasons. First of all, owing to the impact of globalization, the cultural traditions may be better preserved and generated in rural areas other than cities. Furthermore, even if I concede the assertion that the cities do better in preserving and generating nation's cultural traditions than rural areas, it does not mean governments must ensure the financial support of their major cities just because of this reason. Accordingly, I am inclined to argue that the rural areas of a nation deserve more attention from the government.
To begin with, the cultural traditions may be better preserved and generated in rural areas rather than cities. Cities of the world are being homogenized and cultural traditions are losing their place in cities mainly due to the proceeding of globalization. For instance, the architectural style is becoming more and more similar between cities while the old buildings which have a unique style reflecting the cultural tradition of one nation are removed for urgent desire of the land. In addition, people in cities are always busy with work and social association and the cultural traditions become more and more meaningless. Few people spend their time on cultural traditions, and citizens are often indifferent to cultural traditions even in traditional festivals. In contrast, rural people preserve the traditional style buildings much better than citizens because they do not need the land urgently. Moreover, there are often aboriginals with conserving their culture traditions completely in the mountains or rainforest.
Secondly, I argue that more financial support should be put on the rural areas to help them to solve the problem of poverty. A main task with which all the governments will confront sooner or later is to eliminate the poverty and to eliminate the large distinction between the riches and the poverties. Therefore, governments should lay more emphasis on the rural areas to improve the basic establishments, such as medical care, education, insurance system and so forth. In addition, another reason why governments should pay more attention to rural areas rather than major cities is that there are more people in rural areas than in cities in most countries, especially in developing countries. In other words, governments should be on most people’s behalf(,?) therefore, they should pay more attention on rural areas for most people are in rural areas and these people often can not compete with that in cities. Finally, major cities have their own economic systems which make it sure that major cities have the ability to survive by themselves in generally speaking.
To sum up, I insist on that governments should take rural areas for first consideration when they decide to give financial support. It's difficult for major cities to preserve and generate cultural traditions in the era of economic globalization, and preserving and generating cultural traditions is not the main factor to give financial support. Factually, the rural areas are need more financial supports. Thus, governments should lay more emphasis on rural areas.
