issue185:
Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways no speaker or reformer ever could.

Ex:Dr. Hwang Woo Suk,Stanford prison experiment 等。

The speaker asserts that scandals, whether in politics, academic and other areas being useful, can call our attentions on problems via means no speaker and reformer ever could. To some extent, it is really the case. However, ever coin has its two sides. On one hand, scandals in some cases actually function as a guidance to those underhand problems; but on the other hand, they also serve to distract the public concentration, even can lead to a distorted zeitgeist. Then, a case-by-case analysis will be put forward.

In political domain, scandals which might act as a fatal detriment to political lives of those politicians, nevertheless, can serve to spur the development and consummation of our legal system. An apt illustration in hand is the bribery and accounting fraud scandal of Enron Corporation, which was one of the world’s leading electricity, natural gas and communications companies and was named “American’s Most Innovative Company” for six consecutive years by Fortune magazine. It is alleged that Enron officials use political connections with Clinton and Bush to exert pressure on securing contracts in Central, South America, Africa and the Philippines, and also revealed its institutionalized, systematic, and well-planned accounting fraud. This event gave a heavy blow to the presidential reputation of Clinton and Bush, and rendered the people being dissatisfied with the leadership of these two presidents (authority of the government.) In the opposite perspective, it propelled the passage of new laws to circumscribe private or some special-interest groups’ campaign contributions, and also in a large scale, enhanced/elevated the level of scrutiny and surveillance our public officials should hold. Therefore, its two contrary effects are clearly presented. (Surely, no public speaker or reformer could have called our nation’s collective attention to the problem of presidential misconduct unless these two scandals had surfaced.)

As to the academic realm, scandals, as plagiarism, fabricating experiment data, unmoral experiments, bring more disadvantages than advantages to the country and society, which undermine the holiness and the pure atmosphere of academic field and even worse, are a waste of tax payers’ money. Maybe the paradigmatic modern example lies in Dr. Hwang Woo Suk, who claimed that his research team had created the world’s first cloned human embryos and extracted stem cells from them, and was hailed as global stem cell pioneer and national hero in South Korea, in fact, was guilty of fabricating key data and high resolute photographs in two papers which were published in the top journal of natural science research—Science. Although this fraudulent action result in the establishment of more restrict evaluation system which would benefit the whole kingdom profoundly, their side-effects, for instance, the waste of egregious amount of money funding it, the declination of reputation of the whole South Korean academia, also his personal fame and career, outweigh those benefits. With the attraction of fame and properties, nowadays, scandals are popular in the academic region. A more scrutinous system and occupational moralities are badly required.

Other fields, like entertainment, sports, scandals functioned as different roles to exert their influences. As in sports games, many athletes depended on Banned Drugs (banned doping drugs) to succeed and involved in some illegal betting, which severely impaired the principle of fair competition. Juventus F.C., which is one of the Italy’s oldest and most renowned football clubs, faced a impending demotion to Serie B, because it is accused of match-fixing and violating the sports code’s requirement for loyalty and honesty. The sanction/penalty result from the scandal will largely cut down its budget and lose its fans. People also cast on scandals to make them known to the world in turn raise their personal value, especially in entertainment community.  Such as Pairs Hilton, Kate Moss, or some other pop-stars etc, to some extent received more attention and intangibly promote their personal value after the scandals were exposed to the public. Those scandals attracted our eyeballs only on themselves, but missed a further reflection of their essence.

In conclusion, with a detailed analysis, it is clear that scandals can alert us to problems we might have never found, but they also bring some side effects, as far as I am concerned, which preponderate over those benefits. With an avaricious appetite for fame and fortune, some people employ any means they could conceive to attain their destination, which lead to a flooding of scandals nowadays. Detailed legal articles and surveillance measures are badly needed.
