I was wondering what is education for, for the society, for the knowledge, or for the individual, or something else. The answer depends on different education. I think the basic education is used to teach students how to survive in this society while the advanced education is used for training specialists who will deep into a specific field. In this way, the effects of education differ, and how to make education effective differs.

In this society, most people went to school to get educated just for basic knowledge, there is no need to specifically design the education to meet individual needs and interests. Because the aim of basic education is to train these people meet the need of the society and get basic capacity to compete with others. Under these circumstances, students have the responsibility to fit in the environment even learn to create conditions for their own needs and interests. Educators should set up connections between education step and society step for students in this way, by which they could show students what the society actually like. Because it is very cruel to survive, no one will create conditions for the fresh men to satisfy them or to meet their needs. Just like in our university, during our first and second year, there are compulsory courses for every student. These courses are all the same for every different major students, because they are basic, for example, computer science, although most students are not major in computer science and do not want to become Bill Gates, that is a basic skill for a person to look for a job and to survive. If the educators just meets individual needs and I do totally not like computer, can I survive in this society, where every company has a demand on one’s computer using ability.  

However, ruling out surviving in this society, we still have other pursuit, earning a life is just what basic education cares. There is also advanced education, by this means, the education should necessarily meet the individuals. Take university students as the example again, the junior and senior students have the free spaces for them to learn their own major which they choose when they are enrolled. And all the compulsory public courses are all finished when they are sophomores, so they have free time to learn major courses which is according to their own selection and interests. In addition, when they finished the basic education, they have already had the capability to survive, to adapt the environment, and kwon what they actually interest in. The students already have a clear awareness of themselves, what field they like, what is he or she good at, and what is his or her career plan. I think a conscious student have more energy and confidence to go on his or her study.
To conclude, the student when they are accepting basic education, there is no need to meet the students’ interests, because they are learning basic skills to fit in this society. But advanced education should meet the students in order to train more and more specialists. In this way education would be more effective.
