ISSUE147-"Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
Tradition and modernization are both indispensable for human existence. It is unnecessary and even absurd to choose one while casting aside the other. In fact, despite the conflict between them in certain areas, they have long coexisted during the history of human beings, jointly contributing to the prosperity of our society as a whole.
There is no denying that tradition and modernization clash oftentimes. On the one hand, some deep-rooted yet outdated concept in our mind inherited from the tradition has indeed sabotaged the well-being of our society as a whole. Consider, for example, the entrenched notion that woman is inferior to man goes in sharp contrast with the code of equality regardless of genders in modern society. After all, when tradition loses its vigor to solve the advent of new problems, it should be subordinate to the modernization. On the other, the modernization also brought about environmental degradation, over consumption of natural resources, and nuclear deterrent, which arise not only from modernization itself, but error and negligence made by human beings.
Notwithstanding above all, for the most time, modernization and tradition coexist well and jointly contribute to the better human existence. On the one hand, tradition is the value, culture, or civilization that forged through all the endeavors of human beings to perpetuate our culture in almost all established standard, our customs, rituals and ceremonies, to name just a few. First, it provides us with the great heritage of all our ancestors which inevitably inspire the innovations and creativity that are conducive to the modernization. In fact, the vitality of tradition lies in its development. For example, the most advanced assembly line always produce the traditional commodities, such as food and medicine, and the only difference lies in its high efficiency. Secondly, the traditional customs and rituals help perpetuate the most important culture and civilization. For example, the United States still celebrate Eastern day, Thanksgiving Day and regularly either go to churches or pray at home, in this way, the American keeps their belief in Christianity and self-identity. While Chinese people celebrate the spring festival, mid-Autumn day, to seek the harmony and happiness of what the tradition of Confucianism acclaim. Thus, tradition still holds its sway over all of us and thrives hand in hand with modernization.
On the other, modernization, in sociology, refers to the transformation from a traditional, rural, agrarian society to a secular, urban, industrial society. It represents the great aspiration of modern people to achieve a better living standard materially and spiritually and boost the development of tradition. Starting from the industry revolution, the modernization never ceases to give us surprise of more convenient-effective way of life, bringing the free economic system, fast-changing science and technology, democracy, legislation, to name just a few. All of these save us from the cruel feudalism and serfdom and infuse into our mind the vigorous spirit of equality, freedom and high efficiency. In fact, the history of human beings is a process of the constant renewal and reformation of tradition through modernization to achieve better existence. Thus, modernization and tradition, for the most time, are not mutually exclusive.
All in all, tradition and modernization both are rooted in the needs of human life and are the means by which to meet such needs. Indeed, The history of human beings is full of predicaments and thus evolves in the process of a synthetic transformation and renewal of tradition through modernization. |
