117The following is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores.
"Over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past, we should take advantage of this work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such as paper, pens, and staplers. With these changes, our office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of our stores."
正文如下:
In the argument the author reaches the conclusion that the department supplying office machines and other catalogs in Valu-Mart store will be the most profitable. The bases for the conclusion are followed: a survey shows that most respondents reported to be required more home-work; the market for office-supply in Valu-Mart is not impressive and the stock of office supplied will be increased. The conclusion lacks credibility because the evidence cited in the argument does not offer strong support to what the author maintains.
At first, from the survey quoted in the argument, however, we find no sign of such procedure for randomly sampling, of evidence that the respondents are representative of the general all, no sign to imply that the number of person involved in the survey is enough for the analysis. So the result of the survey does not provide sufficient support to the author’s conclusion. And at the same time, assuming that the survey is effective and now there are numerous people need to take more home work, how about the trend in the future? No data or evidence available can give some light to this point.
Secondly, even if the trend concluding from the survey is true and the tread will continue in the future, there is no data available to show that the people who are required to take work home will buy home office machines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines and other supplied as paper, pens, and staplers. In all likelihood, all of them are provided already by their company or the works required to take does not need any such supplements, which only are tracked though computer and contracted by internet. For example, the work is about to contact customs of company.
Lastly, even assuming there are numerous people will buy the office machines and other office articles from the department of store, no evidence is offered to justify the department will be the most profitable in the store. the author fails to take into account other factors which may influent its profit and it is possible that other department have more effective and profitable market than office-supply department.
All in all, the evidence mentioned in the argument is vague and uninformative thus does not provide convincing support to the recommendation. To better evaluate the argument, we need more information concerning whether exiting possibility of plenty of purchasing of office supply, what is more, we need consider and seek other ways to improve the department profit.
