"In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
In our era, television set now is widely available to people; it is true that it change people's living a lot and bring more knowledge which could not be accessible to audience by reading books. However, does the television make reading book less important than before, or moreover, people could learn all knowledge just by watching TV? I don't think so. Although television provides us a way to learn knowledge, the importance of reading book doesn't reduce.
Watching TV news could get the most immediate information about what was or even is happening all over the world, not only the mere facts but the real processes of the important events that books can't offer. Except for news, other programs like the famous DISCOVERY and National Geography could offer a wide range of knowledge vividly that is also books can't catch up with. However, besides news broadcasting and programs like DISCOVERY, most programs TV offering is for entertainment that may be just make you laugh, without any knowledge including. Now watching TV was not seen as a method of learning knowledge, but was viewed as an activity that impedes people's-especially young children's-study and most time it just served as a way of killing time. In my opinion, now TV mainly serves its roles as providing immediate information by news report and a method of entertainment but not a way of getting knowledge..
In contrast, reading books has its unique advantages that TV forever can't own, and one is that the knowledge of books is well selected and organized. The knowledge in books usually has been standing for many tests in a relative long time thus it is reliable; the knowledge in books often systemic and well organized, so readers could get a whole picture easily, not like watching TV, you have to wait for the time and then you may have forgotten the former parts. Besides, usually, the TV programs just present the event, with little or no background introduction, so if you want to have a full understanding of the content of TV programs, you have to get basic knowledge from books. For example, if you are watching a program on economics, you have to know the basic concept of this field such as value, demand, supply, ect to full understand it, but because the time of a program is limited and may be others have known these concepts, the program will not provide you these knowledge. In this situation, the best way is turning to books. For TV covers some range that books may overlook, so it requires us also have to know more background knowledge; in this sense, rather than reading book is not important, it in fact is a more important thing that used to be.
Although TV programs have a relative large wide coverage of field, some knowledge is hardly be covered by it like physics and mathematics. We can't expected a person could learn knowledge of these subjects through watching TV, because to full master these knowledge, we have to first learn their basic concepts, then find the answers for questions which usually are our class work or home work to learn the reasoning process and the logic thinking method; moreover, we even should do experiments ourselves. I can't expect only by watching TV, a person could real learn the knowledge of these fields. May be TV programs have its advantage on presenting knowledge of geography, biology and so on, but the abstract knowledge of philosophy and mathematics, and the practical knowledge of physics and biochemistry is too hard to be presented by TV programs.
Finally, the true study involve large quantity of actively thinking, which may require a short pose to think or even a long time of pose to do profound thinking to digest the knowledge a person has just received; although books let these readers do so, TV programs do not. In a large sense, audiences just receive information passively; they don't have much choice on which kind of information they will get, when and where they get. In contrast, books are more convenient, books are always exist there and portable, so readers could select which books they wish to read, on which time and in which place. What's more valuable is, if they have a question, then can have a pose to overcome it; if they have ideas enlightened by the books they are reading, they could stop to develop their ideas. We can also discuss when we have problems and ideas when we reading books. In a word, reading books is an active process with great freedom of learning knowledge while watching TV is a passive one.
I admit in the era of TV, people could get knowledge that books can't offer us owning to the TV programs; however, the inborn flows of it make it can't replace books as a method of get knowledge, even not to say replaced books completely. Now, many region of our globe have entered the era of information age which is based on computers and Internet. Although computers and Internet have conquered most disadvantages of TV and shows several impressing advantages, the possibility that getting knowledge through Internet replace reading books is still not sure.

However, besides news broadcasting and programs like DISCOVERY, most programs TV offering is(are?) for entertainment that may be just make you laugh(maybe "bring you joy" or "charm you" are better), without any knowledge including. Now watching TV was(is) not seen as a method of learning knowledge, but was viewed as an activity that impedes people's-especially young children's-study and most time it just served as a way of killing time. In my opinion, now TV mainly serves its roles as providing immediate information by news report and a method of entertainment but not a way of getting knowledge..

The knowledge in books usually has been standing for many tests in a relative long time thus it is reliable; the knowledge in books often systemic and well organized(和前面的那个organize有点重复), so readers could get a whole picture easily, not like watching TV, you have to wait for the time and then you may have forgotten the former parts. Besides, usually, the TV programs just present the event, with little or no background introduction, so if you want to have a full understanding of the content of TV programs, you have to get basic knowledge from books. In this situation, the best way is turning to books. For TV covers some range that books may overlook, so it requires us also have to know more background knowledge; in this sense, rather than reading book is not important, it in fact is a more important thing that used to be.

I can't expect only by watching TV(but you cannot expect only by reading books too), a person could real learn (fully understand is better)the knowledge of these fields. May be TV programs have its advantage on presenting knowledge of geography, biology and so on, but the abstract knowledge of philosophy and mathematics, and the practical knowledge of physics and biochemistry is too hard to be presented by TV programs.
Finally, the true study involve large quantity of actively thinking, which may require a short pose (pause?)to think or even a long time of pose to do profound thinking to digest the knowledge a person has just received; although(这里用although不对,用since) books let these readers do so(这句比较拗口), TV programs do not. In a large sense, audiences just receive information passively; they don't have much choice on which kind of information they will get, when and where they get. In contrast, books are more convenient, books are always exist there and portable, so readers could select which books they wish to read, on which time and in which place. What's more valuable is, if(whenever is better) they have a question, then can have a pose to overcome it; if they have ideas enlightened by the books they are reading, they could stop to develop their ideas. We can also discuss when we have problems and ideas when we reading books. In a word, reading books is an active process with great freedom of learning knowledge while watching TV is a passive one(这句总结的好).
I admit in the era of TV(开头用过era了,换一个把), people could get knowledge that books can't offer us owning to the TV programs; however, the inborn flows of it make it can't replace books as a method(应该说主要的method) of get(getting) knowledge, even not to say replaced books completely.(这句有问题,前半句说不能取代书本成为学习的方式,后半句说更不用说完全取代书本了) Now, many region of our globe have entered the era of information age which is based on computers and Internet. Although computers and Internet have conquered most disadvantages of TV and shows several impressing advantages, the possibility that getting knowledge through Internet replace reading books is still not sure.
