How do human-beings identify themselves? In this era of rapid social and technological change leading to increasing life complexity and psychological displacement, to correctly identify oneself becomes more and more substantive in keeping one's mental health. As the speaker sees it, the identification primarily depends on social groups to accomplish. I associate myself with his perspective, as human need social groups to establish one’s emotional belonging and the sense of safety, as well as to help the process of self-identification.

Admittedly, there are people that refuse to acknowledge the process of our identification with social groups. Such as Jean Paul Sartre, who holds the belief that one can only identify one's achievement by oneself, instead of by social group. For the reason above, he refused the Nobel Prize. However, we should see that individuals like Satire are especially rare, thus most people still rely heavily on social groups to define themselves.

A current example involves the ultimate significance of the role social group plays in the establishment of individual emotional safety. In devoid of sense of social belonging, feeling of safety along faded, in terms of the feeling of being separated by others and bearing no relationship with outside. Abraham Maslow point out in his hierarchy of needs model, that safety and belonging are both basic needs for a normal individual. Only when the need of safety is satisfied can individuals pursue other values such as esteem and self-actualization. It is easy to see, that one who is innocent of social identification would easily being upset, and his self-confident may also decline significantly. Thus the importance of social group contributes to self-define cannot be overlooked.

Moreover, the virtue of social group spills over to its contribution to the process of self-identification. According to a resent survey throughout the States, faces gained most popularity are the ones that carry most factors represented to the social group the respondent belongs. That is to say, people rely on the feature in their own social groups to establish their sense of aesthetic. The process of self-definition can also explain by the social group identification for the simply reason that they tend to justify themselves in the same way as to others. For this reason, social groups can swing people's opinion greatly and even decide individual definition.            

To sum up, the speaker's contention that social groups are primary factors that influence the process of human self-definition. It manifests itself in nearly every aspect of our lives. Therefore, to take this conclusion in mind will help every one to lead a happier life.
