Nowadays, with the rapid development of science and technology, historical records adopt not only written materials, but also videos, images, voices and other kinds of high-tech methods. Technically, videos without audio are made up by time-sequenced frames of images. Video camera has been a popular device for recording images, videos with or without sounds or voices. At famous tourists spots around the world, tourists with video cameras in their hands take photos and videos.

Admittedly, video records are so accurate and convincing that have become an important form of documentation. On September 11th, 2001, the twin towers of World Trade Center in New York were crashed into by two airliners and collapsed. Meanwhile, the Pentagon was also attacked by aircraft collision. This terrorists attack caused thousands of deaths and huge economical loss. Of course, video records could show this incident accurately and convincingly than written records. Tens of million people watched shocked news and videos of the attack continually broadcasted by TV networks like CNN and ABC. With the assistance of accurate videos, man could definitely know many details of the incident, such as how the jetliners crashed into the twin towers, how they collapsed and even men were jumping down from the towers. Videos and images provide much more informative details than editorials written by journalists.

Nevertheless, video records as a type of documentation bear several defects comparing with written records. Video could record a heavily wounded man covered with blooded dust crept from the bottom of a damaged car nearby the twin towers of World Trade Center, but not his feelings and mental activities at that very moment. Yet he could record his feelings and mental activities himself by writing. Also, videos and images could record large amounts of informative details, but without image notes and video commentaries they maybe hardly understood. Consider the video mentioned in this paragraph above, without any commentary it could only provide detailed scene without the time, location, background, his name and etc., thus many people are likely to consider it as a disaster film as Deep Impact directed in high-tech studios. Written materials could make videos and images more easily understood and hence more useful and valuable.

Additionally, written record itself could be a type of independent documentation. The bills passed by Congress are documented by written materials but videos. Contracts signed by the two sides are documented by writing but videos. Dissertations are conserved by writing but videos. Historical events and their significance were recorded by writing but videos. Until today maybe forever people adopted writing as a type of independent of documentation from the moment language and its writing was invented in ancient. Comparing with video, the advantages of writing such as low cost, easily conserved, copied and spreaded, hardly faked as signature is concerned ensure that the important role played by writing is impossibly replaced by videos.

In conclusion, though videos are accurate and convincing records, without written records, video camera could not make a completed form of documentation for only informative details provided which are not enough. Also, writing is not abandoned and will be used in the future.
