"The concept of 'individual responsibility' is a necessary fiction. Although societies must hold individuals accountable for their own actions, people's behavior is largely determined by forces not of their own making."
Basically, I agree with the speaker's first contention, that individual responsibility plays an important role in the real life of everyone. People have to consider() seriously the result of every behavior. However, I strongly disagree with the speaker's second contention, that people's behavior is largely enforced by external forces, such as morality, ethnics, law, and interest. I believe everyone owns his or her right to determine what to do, regardless of the influence of other factors, which in fact may give a little support to the speaker's assertion.
It is undeniable that everyonelives in a society replete with principles, due to which the influence of external forces is omnipresent. In any organization, people have to stick to the agreement established before they join the enterprise while working on any jobs. For example, student in class must keep silence while the teacher is imparting knowledge, so does anyone in the library. A soldier have to obey order no matter right or wrong in the war. Nixon's watergate story is an apt illustration that even the president has to face to the criticisms and supervision of mass media and leave his position ultimately. It is those basic principle listed in the society that ensure that any organization could operate effectively and efficiently and the whole society is harmonious.
However, I have to point out that the external force can only affect people's behavior to some extent, neither fundamentally nor determinantly, whereas it is one's own character, ambition, braveness, faith that ultimately determine one's deed. As the saying goes "all things are easy that are done willingly", one with a firm belief would attain his objective no matter how difficult it is. For example, Bronu held the belief firmly that the earth was round and the universe was infinite up to his death, though he had been threatened to death to give up his opinion times without number. Martin Luther king who devoted himself to the interest of American Blacks, adhered to his idea to break down the unfair social system where Blacks were confined to the positions of second class citizenship. He did not change his idea while facing pressure from the both government and the society. These two stories stated above teach us a positive example that people's determination cannot be changed easily by external forces, which actually have little influence on people's behavior. In fear of external forces, people have enough choices to determine his or her future, and the(the多余) they always select the choice best for themselves according to their own judgement, and in this process, the influence of internal factors outweigh largerly that of external forces.
Finally, I do believe that it is necessary for any society to educate its citizens to embrace the concept of "individual responsibility", and try their best to make contribution to the society. The progress and advancement of any society spring from the effort of every citizen. Any society will degenerate if everyone tries to escape individual responsibility and pursue a carefree lifestyle. Besides, any attainment cannot be achieved without hardship and endeavor. In order to build up a progressive and advanced society, people have to pay great effort to overcome obstacles and difficulties to fulfill own responsibility in accordance with the interest of the whole society. In this sense, individual responsibility is more than a mere fiction, but a great power to drive the progress of human beings. Also, it would be much more advisable for any society to enact laws accordingly to encourage better fulfillment of individual responsibility, and inhibit any trend to escape it.
In sum, anyone would be influenced by external forces, but it is other internal factors including ambition, faith, character that ultimately determine people's preference while making decisions. Besides, without the very notion of individual responsibility, any societies could neither progress nor advance. And the surest path to success for both individuals and societies is to fulfill individual responsibility at best with the maximization of the interest of whole society at the same time.
