Issue55"Competition forhigh grades seriously limits the quality of learning at all levels of education."
. The discussion of the issue among individuals and in society as a whole has come into vogue during the last decades. In my point of view, I agree with the speaker that competition for high grades seriously limits the quality of learning in all levels of education. However, in elementary and secondary, moderate competition for high grades is required to stimulate students to do better work.
To begin with, maybe to force students concentrate in grades can stimulate students to spend more energy on study, however, in a long run, it is harmful to students’ development of other skills. After all, one’s abilities are not just evaluated accord the grades. Let alone, high grades of a certain subject do not mean that he/she does well in that field. For instance, in a computer class, almost true forever is the abnormal phenomenon that the one who can write the best code is not the one who can get the highest scores. Ironically, these students with high scores once were regarded by teachers or in other words out traditional educational systems as “prodigy” just because they can exactly repeat what the teachers told them.
In the second, focusing on high grades will probably mislead students about the meaning of learning. To emphasize high grades excessively may exert much pressure on students. For example, when they get high scores in certain exam, it is possible that they are of great joy and act as a King after they are at home. Such cases are go against their growth. On contrary, when they are failed in exam, they may be frustrated and lose self-confidence and even doubt their abilities in other fields. If such things happen at the stage of higher education, it will be useful for them to learn to form a correct attitude toward success and failure, but if they happen at the stage of elementary education, it will exposure them to a wrong road of being complacent of success and discouraged by failure.
However, at the stage of elementary education, it is in a sense necessary to adopt a grade system to stimulate students to concentrate more on study. Common sense tells us that the majority of children are born to enjoy to play, such attributes impede them spending more time on learning. The emphasis on high scores will to some extent help them to realize the importance of learning. Furthermore, competition for high scores will stimulate them to do better work, and hence possibly intrigue their interests on certain subjects. On the other hand, at the stage of higher education, competition for high grades will do no more than limit the quality of learning.
According what is discussing above, whether competition for high grades does good or harm to the quality of learning depends on different stages of education. In most cases, it impede students enhancing their abilities, but in other cases, it also can serve to improve students’ abilities in some fields.
