    Issue 144     "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value." *a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc. "

     Does the artist or the critic give society something of lasting value ? The speaker assert that it is the artist ,not the critic .In general ,I do not agree with the speaker .I believe that both the artist and the critic give society something of lasting value .

     On the one hand , the artist use their inspired effort to provide invaluable artistic creations for the society . Many artistic creations ,including paintings buildings and artificial products ,always indicate the value of the contemporary society .Many people ,as laypersons ,can learn the art and altogether the value of society by appreciating the artistic creations .Thus ,the industry of art can develop more prospectively ,providing more job opportunities and social wealth for the whole society .In addition , almost all the artistic creations are of greatly inspired efforts of artists . It is the inspired thinking that contributes the science and the technology to developing so quickly .At the same time ,we young students can develop our inspired thinking by appreciating and learning the inspired efforts of artistic creations .Therefore , the contribution of artists is invaluable .

    On the other hand , the critics also serve the positive functions to the society ,at least three obvious functions mentioned below .Firstly ,critics can help us better understand and interpret art .we laypersons usually can not understand the meaning of the artistic creation of the author ,let alone know how to interpret it .However ,many critics ,who are familiar with both the artists and the works ,can always have insight views of the artistic creations .Thus ,in some extent ,we novices can not understand and interpret the works well without the guidance of the critics .Secondly , a critic’s evaluation of works serves as a guide , assisting us to determine what is worth our time and energy .For example ,nowadays ,many books ,even though written by a famous writer ,may be of uninspired effort ,which might be useless for our inspired thinking ,and perhaps even waste our time ,money and energy to read it .In this circumstance ,we can distinguish the good works from the bad ones only by the help of the critics’ insightful evaluation .Thirdly ,a critic can provide not only feedback but also constructive suggestion for the artists , which can result in better works of the artists .Perhaps an artist develop slower by his own ,always limited inspired effort ,than by concerning some valuable criticism .As a matter of fact ,an inspired thinking always results from different ideas .

    To sum up ,we can not say that it is the artist alone who gives society something of lasting value ,regardless of the critic .Actually ,the critic also make great contributions for art in terms of better evaluation ，constructive suggestion and valuable guidance. In a word ,both the artist and the critic give society something of lasting value .
