Issue 110. "When we concern ourselves with the study of history, we become storytellers. Because we can never know the past directly but must construct it by interpreting evidence, exploring history is more of a creative enterprise than it is an objective pursuit. All historians are storytellers."
当我们研究历史时，我们变成了讲故事的人。因为我们永远不可能直接地了解过去，而必须通过解释史料来勾画出过去，所以探究历史更多地是一项创造性的事业，而并非一个客观的追寻。所有的历史学家都是讲故事的人。



When I wasyounger, I enjoyed hearing a lot of stories happened many years ago from mygranny. Through these stories, I started to know and understand another period—mygranny’s period. Actually, all of us study history from ancestor’s record,because no one can know the past directly.  I agree that exploring history can be acreative enterprise, but saying that all historians are storytellers ismisleading. I would like to present evidence to support my standpoint.


Admittedly,studying history is not a purely objective pursuit. History offers a storehouseabout past. Historians construct history by interpreting evidence . But thehistory what we study today is not an integrated system because of some externalfactors. War and natural disaster are the two most destructive disasters notonly to human but also to history. Many precious historical heritages weredestroyed during these calamities. The current historians have to piecetogether a picture of the past, and discover new facts continuously. In this situation,historians cannot but propose several hypotheses.

However, althoughhistory is incomplete, hypotheses proposed by current historians are notillusive stories. On the one hand, we still save many historical materials,especially in some old countries, like China,Egypt and India; thesecountries have the earliest character and construct the early humancivilization. From the existing materials we can deduce the unknown part, andeduce scientific hypotheses. On the other hand, while deducing, there must bemany different ideas. The disagreement among historian is a fuller and moreincisive understanding of history. It is the same with other subject, like Einsteinand Bohr, both two developed each theory during their dozens of years’ debate. Therefore,creativity is important to study history, but there must be a basis and thatbasis is historical truth.


In addition,current historian could utilize other professional knowledge to study history,especially some history events without enough materials and information. Chemistry,physics, biology, geography and many other subjects could help historian toresearch naked historical issue. For example, the disappearance of ancientstate of Loulan is always a puzzle to historian. From the 4th century, ancientstate of Loulan disappeared abruptly, generation of historians want to find thereason. While discovering of ruin of Loulan, historians combined advancedtechnology to mensurate the age of ruin and investigate the puzzle ofdisappearance of ancient state of Loulan. Simply put, historical truth is thecore of the study of history.


Finally, althoughthere are many hypotheses and deduction during history studying, the creativework is on the basis of historical truth. Historians have to discover new factswhich help our understanding of the past. There are marked differences betweenhistorians who adhere to truth and storytellers who mainly rely on imagination.If considering hypotheses just as story, human will lost a precious treasure,and could not to understand change and how the society we live in came to be.Meanwhile, extreme depending on hypotheses would bring chaos to historicalresearches.


In sum, the speaker’scharacterization of historian as “storyteller” is unfair. There is no denyingthe importance of creativity during the history study. Nevertheless, we shouldbe careful to treat the historian’s work. They propose hypotheses basing ontruth.
