185. "Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could."
丑闻——无论是政治、学术还是其他领域——可能会是有用的。丑闻可以用演说家或者改革家无法使用的手段让我们注意到某些问题。
Are scandals useful in politics, academia or other areas as the statement suggests? I agree that in most cases scandals can give an impetus to social reforms while on the other hand it sometimes abstract people's attention from things which are relatively more important.
First of all, media coverage of scandals is the most effective way to draw the public attention to certain social problem. Nowadays, as the technology develops, newspaper, radio, TV and the Internet enable us to know what happens in the world almost the same time the affair takes place while in the past, in would take months for what happens in the North America to be known by people in Asia. Once the scandal is reported, it will soon spread all around the world and attract public attention to it and stimulate people's interest in the deeper social problem behind the scandal, it is no doubt more effective than any speaker's speech or reform.
In addition, numerous examples in our life indicate that expose a scandal often contributes to a social effort to solve the exposed problem. Perhaps the paradigmatic scandal example is the Watergate scandal. After the scandal, the level of scrutiny and the accountability to which the public officials are held in the US is increased. Several years ago, when I was still in high school, two students of my school was caught kissing in the subway and the photo was widely spread in the Internet, you may think it is very common nowadays, however, at that time in China, we were taught to obey the rules and it was a big challenge to the moral standards in people's heart. Finally, the school passed an act that another moral class is added every week in order to improve and strength our moral thoughts.
Moreover, fear of scandals can force a government or a political party or a company to improve its public performance. A.M.Lindbergh has said that the most exhausting thing in life is being insincere. A man who is found dishonest makes people feel angry at him, a company which is found dishonest makes customers turn away from it, a government which is found dishonest makes the voters lose faith in it which is mush the same way scandal works, so before a party performs a scandal next time, with the fears of the results mentioned, it would think thrice before taking actions.
On the other hand, scandals may abstract people's attention from things which might be more important and which they should pay more attention to. For instance, each time before the US general election, the Democrats and the Republicans would try their best to find the scandals of the candidates in the other party in order to transfer the public attention from the policy mistakes or demerits of themselves to the bad aspects of the competitor.
In sum, I agree that scandals focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could, however, whether it is useful or harmful would have to depend on the specific cases.
