Argument 71.Copper occurs in nature mixed with other minerals and valuable metals in ore, and the proportion of copper in the ore can vary considerably. Until fairly recently, the only way to extract pure copper from ore was by using a process that requires large amounts of electric energy, especially if the proportion of copper in the ore is low. New copper-extracting technologies can use up to 40 percent less electricity than the older method to process the same amount of raw ore, especially when the proportion of copper in the ore is high. Therefore, we can expect the amount of electricity used by the copper-extraction industry to decline significantly.
By citing the fact that the new copper-extracting technologies can use up to 40 percent less electricity than the older method to process the same amount of raw ore, the arguer unfairly broaden these technologies to embrace all ore’s extracting. Therefore, the arguer asserts that we can expect the electricity used by the copper-extraction industry to decline significantly. However, at the same time, the arguer fails to consider some possible alternatives as follows:
First of all, since the proportions of copper in the ore vary considerably, the arguer does not tell us the copper proportion of other ores besides raw ore while the arguer also points out that the lower proportion of copper, the larger amounts of electric energy requires. It is possible that the raw ore’s main constitution is copper and other ores’ proportion of copper are much lower than the former; therefore refining copper from raw ore requires low electric energy while other ores processing need a great of electricity. For example, processing a kilogram raw ores needs 10 w compares to the average of other ores’ 10,000 w. Though the electric energy using is 40 percent lower than before, the decline of electric energy is 4 w. However, when it comes to process raw ore, there is still long way to go, because 4 w can be ignored with respect of 10,000 w.
Secondly, are the new technologies using by extracting copper from raw ore also the same with other copper ores? As we known, the copper ores have many other compounds we called impurities which do not include copper; moreover, these impurities vary greatly in different ores.
However, different impurities may cause the differences among the methods of purifying. Maybe the new technologies are just suitable to purify the copper from the raw ore and are useless when confronting other ores. Moreover, if we force all factories to use the new methods without thinking thoroughly, a large lose will be created. Unless the arguer provide us the experiment doing on other copper ores to proof that the new method can be used widely, we cannot accept the arguer’s conclusion as true.
In addition, in the argument, the practicability of the new method the arguer talks above is still questionable. There are many new methods come to the world every day, but only a few of them which are easily realized and have low costs can be used in industry. As for the industry extracting copper from ores, beside the requirements we talk above, we should also take respect of environment, therefore, it must be environmental friendly. The arguer cannot convince me on the new method will be widely used in industry until the arguer provide me enough evidence to show the new method accord to the demands we talk above.
In sum, we cannot believe the new technologies the arguer referred to will cause the decline of the use of electric energy in copper extracting industry for the arguer ignored several details such as the proportion of other ores, the availability and the practicability of the method.
