TOPIC: ISSUE17 - "There are two types of laws: just and unjust. Every individual in a society has a responsibility to obey just laws and, even more importantly, to disobey and resist unjust laws."
WORDS:488 TIME: 00:45:00 DATE: 2008-2-20 10:59:09
The assertion divided laws into two kinds which is just and unjust laws, and it said that individuals should choose to obey just laws and, meanwhile, to disobey and resist unjust ones. In my opinion, I am fundamentally disagree with the assertion since it is really hard to judge what are just laws and what are unjust ones, thus, it is even harder to make every individual choose to obey so-called just laws as well as disobey the opposite.
As we all know, every individual has their own ways for thinks so that everyone would have different views of classifying just and unjust laws. Therefore, the assertion equals to that people would have the right to obey those laws that they thought it just by themselves. If the situation becomes worse, it will be likely that people just obey those laws they like or protect their own interests. For example, the garbage collection factories located near neighborhood can help people collect and process garbage. It will be convenient for the factory to build near neighborhoods so that they can collect it at the first time. But the residents will be unwilling to have a garbage collection factory near their house since they have bad smell when processing garbage. What I mean is, whether the law is just or not depends on the judger' stand, especially while two of them have the opposite stands like the factory and the residents do.
Sometimes, it is hard or even impossible for people to judge whether the law is just or not when the case is complicated enough. The famous case of O. J. Simpson is a good example that it is still believed by some people that he do murdered his ex-wife while the judge has claimed his innocent and not guilty, since the case is really complicated are beyond the ability of investigation of people. There is something wrong with the process during the investigation of the police so that it is hard to claim his guilty, but come to the case itself, there are lots of clues pointing Simpson the murderer.
Last but not least, even we admit that there do exist some laws seems unjust to all the people of society, we should take it into consideration that it will be dangerous for people to disobey or resist to the unjust laws, since laws have a power of judgment and it can make those people disobey or resist to it pay costs or even go to the prison.
In sum, people should always obey laws except those were unjust or kind of out-dated to the public since the aim of the existence of laws is to protect the public interests. However, we should try to change those unjust laws through legal methods, Such as Elle Wood, the blonde lawyer of the movie called ‘Legally Blonde’, change the unjust law into just by trying to make her bill pass. |
