Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.
According to the speaker scandals are useful in areas such as politics, academia, and others for they can focus our attention in ways that no others can. While I fundamentally agree with the statement that scandals can focus our attention on things around us I seriously doubt that they are useful in politics, academia, or other areas. As discussed below:
To the threshold matter that scandals can focus our attention on certain things to a degree that no other things could do, I can say that it is human nature to be curious and scandals satisfy our curiosity. In spreading scandals each participant is a professional writer, use his or her imagine, adjust the story according to his or her personal need no matter what the truth is. Any way to retort a scandal is far away from committing illegal behavior. An apt illustration supporting my point of view involves the love affair between President Clinton and his secretary Monica Lewinsky. Not any did the opposite party pay keen attention the all the things, anyway it was the job to spread bad words about Bill Clinton, almost the whole nation were included in Clinton’s love affair. I don’t have the first hand statistic information to be completely sure about the degree to which the nation were involved in his---what I can say, family affair but surely, you can never be too exaggerated.
As to the author’s assertion that scandals can benefit politics, academia and so forth, forgive me for my rudeness, I can’t stop considering it as ridicule. Scandals in my point of view any serves to gossip during the time when you are completely unoccupied. Its only value lies in providing a topic to discus that may, to some extent promote your personal relation with these who share the same view with you. It never occurs to me that scandals will contribute to political or academia area. On the contrary, they may be harmful to these areas. For example, in political area, It is very likely that you may hear on the street or have a glance on a newspaper that our next president, the forecasting owner of the white house is Barack Obama without providing any supporting information how this conclusion is arrived. What does this rumor means? Does it contribute to the president election as the statement goes? Or is it just a little political skill played by Republican Party to canvassing? And in academia area, like the South Korean’s Dr. Hwang Woo Suk scandal, does it really help promoting the purity of academic as a lot of people would argue or does it only serve to chill us ordinary people to the bone that the lofty science like any areas with interests involved would not be genuine? What else may happen? Should we trust the science or should we keep alert about everything that said to be true? To sum up scandals in academia area seriously undermine it authority.
In conclusion I agree with the statement only on so far as they may focus our attention on people involved, they provide us a topic when gossiping .As to the contend that they could benefit such areas as politic or academia unless the author provide more information and more analysis to support this opinion I insist on my view that it may be potentially harmful to these areas, let along do any favor.
