The statement concludes that the lighting in Sherwood High’s classroom seems impairing the student academic performance and teacher morale for several reasons. However, in my opinion many of these reasons can be challenged and the conclusion of the speaker is also open to doubt.
Regarding the first finding the speaker cites that records show the attendance rates, average daily class participation, students’ grads declined and resignations of teacher increased in daylight insufficient months of a year. We cannot find the necessary attachment between this reason and result. There is no evidence to indicate that lighting is the compelling reason to such regression of the students and the teacher’s behavior. There may be other factors lead to these result the speaker neglected. It is probable that the cold climate condition in the winter months made such situation but lighting.
The survey, the speaker mentioned secondly is also difficult to be trusted for us. I have to question about the details of the survey. What is the subject of the survey? when and where does it take? Who is the investigator and who is the interviewee? Because of all of these elements have not been definite, we cannot believe that the result of the survey are property.
Thirdly, the speaker’s example of TVS is not convectively by several reasons too. On one hand, we don’t know whether the standard of TVS are comparable with SH. Either the conditions of TVS is much better or worse than SH, the example has no significance to provide anything.
On the other hand, we have little information of the education of TVS which may be the real reason for student to improve their grades. If a new efficient study system established in the TVS, at the same time of DG introduced, the progress would be the result of the advanced system. Many other conditions must be considered, circumstances, household, climate, etc. They are all the factors which can influence the students grades easily.
In sum, to persuade us to believe that lighting is a main contributor of students’ work and useing GD can resolve the problems which lighting brought , the speaker’s must give us more believable reasons, or make the given reasons more valid with details. I would rather like to get more information in the attachment between the lighting and students wok, the survey, and more characteristic examples.
