Why do we value history significant? Why do the Chinese reckon the history as a "mirror" to ourselves? Why do every culture feel proud of its history no matter it is long or short? The history is the documentation that records the struggles of humans that against nature, other ethnics and even against themselves. We gained from those struggles, and we study them to help us struggle in the future while respect our ancestors.

That is, from my perspective of view, study the trends while try to predict the trends and the identity of culture are the two main functions of history. Both decide whether a history is valuable or not.

When it comes to the trends, the historians study the Great Depression from 1929 to 1931 in order to search for a way out of the ongoing economy mess. Why were people unwilling to consume and why the public pessimistic to the economy, both are decisive matters to economy. The development of society are commonly, if not always, similar to certain extend. Though the economic environment and people's thoughts varied during the period. There fortunately exist some policies or people that are admirable and may suggest the government and public what is necessary. Moreover, since the history is the only material available for us to understand certain issues, why not study it to assist understanding of current issues? It is also true when it comes to the study the American Civil War. The most crucial historians discovered were not that Abraham Lincoln defeated the Jefferson Davis or the troops of Winfield Scott defeated that of Robert Lee. Those external phenomenons are merely the introduction or stimulation for people to dig and understand truth beyond that. It was the time that' king Corn was more powerful than King Cotton', which indicates why the Great Britain or France never recognize the south as an independent nation even the south began its embargo of cotton to the old world. Thus, we understand the trends of war could be, and sometimes is, decided by the support from the out world.

Additionally, it is a waste to study the history only for its trend-prediction function. According to Maslow Hierarchy Pyramid, the self-esteem should be fulfilled after solving the problems of food or safety. People are seeking for the sense of identity. How? It seems only through history, could we get satisfied. Set the study of Civil War as an example again, its the policy related the slavery that fired the battle between those pros and cons. In this regard, the faith all humans are born equal and the African-America should share the same rights with the writes is examined. The success of the Union promotes the identity of the black as a result. Similarly, the theories of Confucius are becoming popular in China again after the banning during the Cultural Revolution. People are proud to be involved in the Chinese cultural value system that Confucius, Hanfeizi and other great thinkers had created. Study of certain history can help to better understanding their situations, and finally the theories. In a word, since it is the power of culture that give people the sense of identity, the study of culture plays a vital role.

In sum, the study of history not only permit us a chance to enjoy the happiness, pains, struggles that have happened, but a better understanding of ourselves. In this regard, more wise decision would be made and more faithful the people will be. Based on these two functions, which part of the history is valuable and how it should be presented to the public to maximize its value should be considered. It is not a matter whether we memorize the elites or the public of the history or whether its relevant to our current daily life, but whether the history can truly help us make best decisions and maintain our cultural identities.
