36"The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries."

Do the greatness of individuals should be appreciated only by the future generation rather than their peers? In my view, the answer is closely associated with specific situations. In some cases, achievements of people do need a long time for recognition, while in others, they are likely to be realized by their contemporaries.

Since prominent people are far more talented than their peers, novel ideas or discoveries raised by them may beyond the understanding of their contemporaries, thus not be widely accepted. This situation has frequently happened in the realm of science. For one hand, due to the limitation of scientific development, most people are confined to existed theories and lack sufficient recognition for creative ideas that surpass average level of current study. Therefore, once a new idea is emerged, it will inevitably incur challenges by researchers form the same field. Especially when a new view contradicts the acknowledged system, the one who build it may be treated as "crazy" and this view as" eccentric". For the other hand, as continuous reexamination for previous theories accounts for a large part in the improvement of science, it requires a relatively long time to substantiate novel ideas. Barbara McClintock, for example, when firstly put forward the theory of transposon in 1951, had confronted with numerous attacks form his counterparts. Being deeply influenced by the theory of classic genetics, her coeval scientists can never imagine genes that "dance" from one genome to another. In spite of disapproval from her peers, McClintock stuck to her original research. 32years later, this discovery was considered as a key contribution in genetics by the next generation, and she was granted the Nobel Prize of biology at the same time. Even in today, most famous scientists still encounter a lot of questions from others and constantly revise their own theories. Maybe their feats can only be decided by future generations,

Additionally, realization of one's achievement is confined to certain historical and political background. In fact, the greatness of individuals, especially in literature, can never be recognized without their works being known by a large amount of people. One obtrusive instance is the well-known novel <<The Story of The Stone>> written by CaoXueqing , Which Was Listed as forbidden book by the ruler in Qing period, for it include a lot of negative viewpoints against Feudalism. Because of this regulation, few had read this novel, let alone to appreciated its social and literary value. Until several decades later, it was recognized as the highest accomplishment in China's literary history. On the contrary, once in a democratic nation which permit latitude, authors are able to present their works freely.Cervantes, writer of the satire novel <<Don Quixote >> which attacked the harmful atmosphere of idealism among aristocrats and feudalists in that era, quickly became the best selling, Cervantes was also honored as excellent writer by his peers. To some extent, the themes of the two novels are similar, yet, the time asked for recognition are totally different.

Nevertheless, the importance of people can be praised immediately owing to particular history events. Since they often play a vital role in change severe situations , their contribution are hardly  ignorant by their peers. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th presidents in America, who had led the Civil War, was widely supported by citizens in his time; Franklin Roosevelt, who successfully reverse declining economy by adopting new Deal in America during 1930s, was acclaimed by the populace; Martin Luther King, the leader of the movement for civil rights, was highly admired by the black. Obviously, specific events create opportunities for their quick acceptance .

In sum, without commensurate vision about new things, their peers may not recognize the attainment of scientists; without relatively free political atmosphere, the authors may get no access to the realization; without appropriate chance, the greatness of individual may not be revealed to the public. Hence, whether the contributions of individuals are acknowledged by their contemporaries or those who live after them largely depend on certain circumstance.

Do the greatness of individuals should(不应该是should问题吧,应该是could的问题) be appreciated only by the future generation rather than their peers? In my view, the answer is closely associated with specific situations. In some cases, achievements of people do need a long time for recognition, while in others, they are likely to be realized by their contemporaries.

Since prominent people are far more talented than their peers, novel ideas or discoveries raised by them may (go?没有谓语) beyond the understanding of their contemporaries, thus can? not be widely accepted. This situation has frequently happened in the realm of science. For(on?有这种说法吗?for one hand) one hand, due to the limitation of scientific development, most people are confined to existed theories and lack sufficient recognition for creative ideas that surpass average level of current study. Therefore, once a new idea is emerged, it will inevitably incur challenges by researchers form the same field. Especially when a new view contradicts the acknowledged system, the one who build it may be treated as "crazy" and this view as" eccentric". For(on) the other hand, as continuous reexamination for previous theories accounts for a large part in the improvement of science, it requires a relatively long time to substantiate novel ideas. Barbara McClintock(楼主给我提供的例子啊,今天作填空还看到这个人了呢), for example, when firstly put forward the theory of transposon in 1951, had confronted with numerous attacks form his counterparts.

后者改称realizing that的结构,感觉会好一些) of one's achievement is confined to certain historical and political background. In fact, the greatness of individuals, especially in literature, can never be recognized without their works being known by a large amount of people. One obtrusive instance is the well-known novel <<The Story of The Stone不是石头记吧,英文名字应该叫the dream of red mansion,在确认一下,而且英文没有书名号吧,讨论,不确定 >> written by CaoXueqing , Which Was Listed as forbidden book by the ruler in Qing period, for it included a lot of negative viewpoints against Feudalism. Because of this regulation, few had read this novel, let alone to(去掉) appreciated its social and literary value. Until several decades later, it was recognized as the highest accomplishment in China's literary history. On the contrary, once in a democratic nation which permit latitude, authors are able to present their works freely.Cervantes, writer of the satire novel <<Don Quixote (书名号很刺眼)>> which attacked the harmful atmosphere of idealism among aristocrats and feudalists in that era, quickly became the best seller (畅销书), Cervantes was also honored as excellent writer by his peers. To some extent, the themes of the two novels are similar, yet, the time asked for recognition are totally different.

Nevertheless, the importance of people can be praised immediately owing to particular history events. Since they often play a vital role in changingsevere situations , their contribution are hardly  ignorant by their peers. Obviously, specific events create opportunities for their quick acceptance
In sum, without commensurate vision about new things, their peers may not recognize the attainment of scientists; without relatively free political atmosphere, the authors may get no access to the realization; without appropriate chance, the greatness of individual may not be revealed to the public(排比用得不错). Hence, whether the contributions of individuals are acknowledged by their contemporaries or those who live after them largely depend on certain circumstance.

Even in today, most famous scientists still encounter a lot of questions from others and constantly revise their own theories. Maybe their feats can only be decided by future generations,唯一的一点疑惑是楼主在分ONE HAND的时候说不同时期的人受当时的条件限制,为什么展开来说一下,例子也很好找。

Additionally, realization of one's achievement is confined to certain historical and political background. In fact, the greatness of individuals, especially in literature, can never be recognized without their works being known by a large amount of people. To some extent, the themes of the two novels are similar, yet, the time asked for recognition are totally different.

Nevertheless, the importance of people can be praised immediately owing to particular history events. Since they often play a vital role in change severe situations , their contribution are hardly  ignorant by their peers.
