Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are.
What kind of the role does the rituals and the ceremonies play in the field of the culture? For my part, they can help people to identify themselves, and without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of self-definition. [开头提出观点很明确,不过感觉直接引用题目中的话稍微多了点。]
In the first place, for the societies, without the rituals and the ceremonies, nearly all of which are the symbols of the culture, their people would lose some parts of their culture and the self-definition. It is undeniable that most of the rituals and the ceremonies contains the spirit of certain national culture which they based on. To take part in the rituals, carriers of the culture, means to be edified by it. If there were no ceremonies in certain society, people in this society would lose a way to approach and comprehend their culture, and be deprived [of] the chance to understand the unique difference in the own national culture between their nation and others; accordingly the people’s sense of who they are would be diminished. For instance, the Pamplola Bull-running Fiesta, the most famous ceremony in Spain, which the whole nation pays attention to, infuse spirit of the Spain—braveness and optimism to Spanish people. We can imagine that without these ceremonies containing the national spirit like the Pamplola Bull-running Fiesta, how much the Spanish culture will lose, and how much the self-definition will be preserved. [觉得对于例子本身的分析还可以再加强:可以简要介绍一下“奔牛节”,并且论述下它对于人们的“self-definition”的作用何在。]
In another place, for people, who have some religious belief, the rituals in the religion also help them to own a clearer sense of who they are. In these rituals, being whelmed in the religious culture, people would have more deeply comprehension of religion and a more stable fidelity to it; thus the believers will have a definite sense of who they are. Without the rituals, at [to] some extent, the believers will have a diminished sense of self-definition. One apt illustration of this point is the baptism in the Christianity, a Christian sacrament marked by ritual use of water and admitting the recipient to the Christian community. After the baptism, the recipient will know clearly that he or she is a Christian.
Finally, there are also many rituals and ceremonies giving individuals the self-identification. Like the marriage ceremony, the president inaugural ceremony, and the rituals of passage, while all of them give the individuals the responsibility, at the same time, they also give them self –definition, which announced the individuals what the states they stay in. [这段有点粗糙了,感觉只是堆了几个例子,而没有相应的说理和分析。]
In conclusion, the rituals and ceremonies play a considerable role for people to define themselves, without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are. [结尾所起的作用不大。]
的确有这样的感觉。 |
