The speaker claims that the effect of studying history only limits to knowing about the past, which has no positive effect on making important decisions today. I strongly against the speaker's idea,  even I admit that today's society has changed a lot.

First of all, history can provide a lot of useful and valuable experience, which help us to learn from the experience and inmune from those human beings had fell down. For  example, the history of world warⅡ has great influence on today's socitey.  In the world warⅡ, we human beings eventually won the evil Fasicm but at the high price---millions of people lost their valuable life,  billions of people became homelss, the once prosperious countries crashed down and more. But this history also warns us by the painful experience-----peace is the only sure way for the whole world to thrive on.  In a word, it  helps people to establish the holy belief, that is to cherish the peace and avoid any chance to start a war. When making decisions, we should take this principle into account, which can play a role in creating a peaceful and harmonious world.  

Secondly, the progress of human beings' development is consistant, and history is not only discription of the past,  but also the foundation of our nowaday society.  History is rich in all kinds of resources----intelligent ideas, and excellent works. Take the idea of "separation of power" for example. This idea is not only innovative at that time, but also has profound  values on today's system. USA,  which is said to be the most adherent to this idea, has established its society syetem following this idea. From this we can conclude that when making decisions, the ideas and the works of the past,  can influence our decisions.

Moreover, history also opens a window to the past and equips us with critical thinkings, like making decisions by comparing with the past.  The example of  Washington immediately comes to my mind. When people hoped Washington could take the office for the third time, Washington insisted that he should not follow the examples of the past----the slavery or the feudlism,  in which the emperor could hold the power until his death and caused a lot negative effects on the development of the society.  Clearly, Washington had critical thinkings about the history, which enabled hime to come to the wise decision, which built up the base of the democracy systems and set a good example all round the world.

Admittedly, our society has experienced such fast development, no matter in technology, economiy, politics,education and so on, that the history can not totally provide us with experience about the solution to nowaday problems.  We should not expect history can be the decisive fators in decision making. However,  history provides different perspectives to view our world,  especially the important critical thinking. The more we learn the history, the more we understand our past, now and even the trend of the future, for progress of human is like a river that came from the past, flows passionately in today's society and will run towards the future.  We do have to take history as a inclusive factor when making any decisions.

To sum up,  history not only tells us what happened in the past, but also calls for more examination about why and how did that happened, and what we can learn from that. Have a thought about history can benefits us a lot when making decisions. Only by this way can we make wise decision without falling down at the same places as our ancestor, absorb the valuable ideas of the past with critical eyes, and predict the trend of the future confidently.
