The following appeared in an editorial on health problems in the country of Corpora.
'Some pharmacies now feature ultrasound machines that screen for an elevated risk of stroke. For a fee, a technician presses a probe against the neck to determine whether any plaque has thickened the walls of the main artery leading to the brain. Researchers have shown that a thickening of artery walls is associated with elevated stroke risk, and such scans typically find that anywhere from 5 to 20 percent of clients have detectable plaque. All pharmacies should offer this service, because early detection of increased risk for stroke will encourage clients to consult with their doctors and make important life-style changes to reduce their risk of having a stroke. This in turn will cause a decrease in overall medical costs in Corpora.'

In this argument, the arguer hastily suggests that all pharmacies offer the service of ultrasound screen, which is said to be effective in detecting stroke. And he also claims that providing this service will save the medical expense. what makes him so confident about the suggestion might attribute to the survey that some clients examed by ultrasound machines were found detectable plaque. However, many logical flaws will render the arguer's suggestion ill-merit.

To begin with, merely based on the survey, the arguer concludes that the ultrasound machine help detect the plaque. However, he fails to exam the validity of the survey. Without any information of the research, it is quite possible that the sample is too small to be convincing. Even if the sample are large, the clients might not representative enough to reflect the whole, which will undermine the conclusion a lot. Further more, even if I were to concede that the survey is conducted in a scientific way, 5 to 20 percent of clients are not a large number, and it means that more people do not have detectable plaque. All of those alternative possibilities will come to reveal how goundless the suggestion is.

Secondly, the arguer seems to over-estimate the effect of the ultrasound machine on preventing stroke. Although he claims early detection of increased risk for stroke can help people avoid stroke, he fails to estabilish the causal relation between life-style changes and reducing risk of having a stroke. No evidence is provided to tell us the risk of having a stroke can be effectively reduced by changing the life-style. As common sense tell us, many factors may be responsible for the stroke, like gene, climate, age and so forth. If this scenario is true, then the suggestion of the arguer is of no use, or little effect.  The suggestion should not be adopted by pharmacies.

Last but not least, the arguer supports his suggestion by claiming that the machines can cause a decrease in overall medical costs.  However, this reason is not untenable at all.  As the arguer mentions in the argument,  the machine's detection will encourage clients to consult with their doctors,  those increased consultation might cause extra expense on medical care. And if we also take other factors into account, like the increasing costs on other medical cares other than stroke cure, the conclusion that those machines can save money is too presumptuous.

In summary, it is too ridiculous to adopt the arguer's suggestion before examing the validity of the survey, and to bolster the suggestion, the arguer also has to show us more evidences, like the causation between stroke and life-style and how the costs will be reduce due to the spread use of this machine.

不是血小板吧 是血斑, 即血管壁上的沉积... 所以个人觉得就是会导致血管壁增厚
