While most people think that cancer diagnosis equals little hope for survival, Armstrong fought off the illness with his strong character and has regained his leading place in cycling. Nowadays people all over the world, suffering from cancers or other serious illnesses, are powered by the story of this outstanding athlete, and bravely struggle with illnesses just as he did. Role models, as the illustrated example, are inspiring people to over come the hardship they confront.

Given the positive impact of role models, is that to say, as the speaker claims, that too much emphasis is place upon role modeling? I strongly disagree that. Generally speaking, people are of independence when imitating role models. On the one hand, before coping others, people have already made comparisons among role models. While this process attributes to select a suitable figure for imitating, it indeed calls for thinking of individuals. For physics major, before she chooses Stephen Hawking, not Mozart or Picasso, for her role model, she might have spent some time deciding the role model, and that is where independent lies. On the other hand, people nowadays have already realized that however excellent are role models, they should not mechanically copy them on everything. Kobe Bryant, for example, while his marvelous skills of basketball are popularly imitated, probably no one will imitate his school performance just for copying him. In fact, people only imitate their role models on things that deserve learning. For two reasons I list above, we have not placed too much but moderate emphasis on role models.

Anyhow, we should learn to think and act dependently instead of entirely copying others. After all, people differ considerably from one another on values, determination, and thinking styles. The individual differences, together with external factors like social environment and culture context, bring role models success. So if we blindly imitate role models instead of thinking and acting according to our own situation, we are put ourselves in a situation of uncertainty, not success.

In conclusion, while role models play a positive part in people’s lives, their impact is not overemphasized. To make best choices people should hold independence in thinking and act.
