Issue 99
“when research priorities are being set for science, education, or any other area, the most important question to consider is: How many people’s lives will be improved if the results are successful?”
The speaker claims when research priorities are being set for science, education, or any other area, the most important question to consider is: how many people’s lives will be improved if the results are successful? I agree with what the speaker has claimed to some extent, just when the research emphasis is put on such fields as applied science, technological education, and artistic aesthetics etc., which actually improve people’s life in a multitude of aspects.
Twenty-first century witnesses the tremendous changes taken place around the world with the dramatic development of scientific technology. When it comes to the applied science, we cannot help thinking of an enormous amount of scientific breakthrough: the advent of computer era free people from the mountainous manual labor, which can greatly improve the efficiency and save more time and energy accordingly; the popularization of internet makes “the global village” possible and people get access to the diversified cultures as well as enjoy the various information as possible as they can; modern transportation means help realize people’s dream to soar in the blue sky like an eagle and cruise in the sea as fish. Indeed, before carrying out researches for the applied science, the researchers are keenly concerned about how much improvement the results will make for the peoples lives when it put into use, and more importantly, how much positive influence the researches’ results will exert upon people’s lives. Undoubtedly, both the improvement and influence upon people’s lives are the ultimate goal of the applied science .It was the progress and development of the science that not only extraordinarily improves the material life but also enriches the spiritual life as well.
Moreover, we are faced with the unprecedented times that highly emphasizes education. Therefore, the results of educational theory provide systematic and convincing methods for the sake of teaching, and consequently, people will surely benefit from educational system and methods. Similarly, as far as artistic fields are concerned, a variety of artistic theories actually display different approaches for us to appreciate different artistic genres with critical aesthetics. What really count is that we are infatuated with the glory and charming(charm) of artistic beauty, which make a difference.
However, does the question apply to research results in any area? Absolutely no. In my opinion, as to theoretical science, take, mathematics, which is the basis for other applied science, as an example, in doing theoretic researches, the first consideration is not about improving people’s lives at all, but about a series of theoretic equation and principles instead, which will certainly vindicate the abstract theory. Just like one of mathematic research results, the well-known Goldbach’s conjecture, does nothing with improving people’s lives, only provides the theoretical basis for other applied science. Another case in point is in physical fields, the Relativity of Einstein, whose important question to consider before conducting researches is anything but related to improve people’s daily lives, but prepare great scientific evidence for the production of nuclear reaction. Although the Relativity is a great theoretical research result, however, it has nothing to do with improving the lives of people. In addition, as is to all, after years’ work, German philosopher Kant, published his famous three books concerning logic philosophy, however influential upon the ideas and thought of people, is nothing but theory, which make no contribution to the improvement of people’s lives. In a word, the research results cannot be helpful to upscale the lives of people unless they are of importance to be put into practice in applied fields.
In sum, without the deliberate research results conducted by diligent scientists, people, to some degree, cannot avail themselves of the progress of civilization and culture for generations; meanwhile, speaker ignores that theoretically research results are of little help in improving people’s lives. While considering the results in applied science, on balance, the speaker can utterly draw the conclusions that the extent to which people’s lives are improved should be put in the first priority.
