According to the speaker, it is the artist, not the critic, who contributes to society with something valuable. Although critics can help us understanding and appreciate art, I strongly agree with the speaker, for the reason that it is artists who create art and bring the society spiritual wealth of lasting value, and that certain ego-driven critics might mislead us in judging art.

To begin with, no one can deny the crucial role of artists in creating artistic works. True art is spiritual wealth of all world; artists pursue enduring beauty, truth and mercy in the world. For instance, when people listen to the Blue Danube, they will surely enjoy the peaceful and pleasant melody, which frees their tension and anxiety. Consider War and Peace, one of the great novels. It helps us to understand the world more deeply and ensure us to distinguish between good and evil. Or consider people's most favorite film of today, Star Wars, which holds many of our dreams and human spirit. Moreover, Steven Spielberg's film Schindler's list, calls for sympathism to Jews and accusal to holocaust. In addition, many works of artists are without any consideration of people of their time and seldom can bring them wealth, however these artists did not give up art. It is the spirit of these artists that contribute to the development of art.

In the development of art, certain ego-driven critics may even play a negative role. Today, Beethoven's music is of high value, however, it was not the case of his time. Beethoven was considered nothing by the critics of that time. It is because many critics often think they are authorities of certain area of art, and they tend to look down upon an artist because of his or her dislike. It is more often the case particularly in today's world. At present, there are many critics who has not read a certain book, or watched a certain movie write criticism about the book or the movie. Moreover, they even criticize a work regardless of its true value only for the purpose of showing their different opinion from others and making people remember their names. And, in some cases, critics can not truly understand the artists' works. To some extant, a artist is the one who can best understand his or her work. The Sydney Opera house is a case in point. After the architect made his plan, many critics thought it would not be practical. The architect stuck to his work, as a result, it turned out to be a wonderful opera house, which is considered as the symbol of Sydney.

Admittedly, there are still many critics who take responsibility to judge art. On the one hand, critics can help us save time in choosing arctic works. For example, today, numerous books are published each day, so it is hard for an ordinary person to choose a book valuable to read. In this case, people can follow the advice of the critics and find the true book they are interested in. On the other hand, through the explanations of critics, people can better understand artistic works. For example, the paint Sunflower of Van Gogh, one of the most famous impressionist works, is impressive by the unique use of colors and painting style which is hard to comprehend by ordinary person who has not learned art theories. Under this circumstance, critics will help people to realize the true meaning behind the appearance of the work.

In sum, I concede that critics can help people find valuable artistic works, however it should not be ignored that there are certain critics play a negative role in the field of art. I strongly agree with the speaker that it is the artists who create art give the society of true value.
