The artists, with their boundless imagination, create various arts in which many have lasting value and give far-reaching influence to the society. However, while we value the contribution of the artists, there is no need to trivialize the role of the critics.

In the first place, in a certain sense, we have to acknowledge that sometimes it is the critics who first find how great an artist is and then he or she gets accepted and treasured by the society. Each year, millions of pieces of art works are created every day, many of them would sink into obscurity. No doubt, the artists themselves could try to publicize for their works, and yet this does not always work out for though they have talents in creation, they may not have equal knowledge as the critics as if his works is of value and how to evaluate it. Well-trained and with rich experience, the critics can tell what are the truly valuables. And then with their broad connection with the publications and the mass media, they could do promotion for the works they consider valuable, and then the society gets to know another genius was born. Or else it is quite possible no matter how talented the artist is, they would die as an anonymous.

In addition, if the critics make the works of those artists sell well in the market, this would bring money to the artist, and with enough funding they are at least economically more equipped to create more works. Before known to the public, many artists live in poverty or are financially dependent on some organizations or governments, this actually hinders their creation for they, in many occasions, have to consider the sponsors' liking and disliking. Equally importantly, the society's acknowledge of the works also encourages the artist to create more. Though there exist artists who do not care much about if the works is accepted by the society, it is human nature to work harder when they know what they are doing is meaningful and others are expecting to see more to be produced.



Finally, the general public, as well as the artists themselves, need the critics to interpret the great works and help the whole society to better appreciate them. Art is the product of creative human activity in which materials are shaped or selected to convey an idea, emotion, or visually interesting form. It inevitably will employ symbols or other complicated techniques to express the personal experience and feelings of the artist. Due to this characteristic, an artistic work cannot always properly get evaluated if the audiences do not have access to the exact background those works are created. Besides, for lack of professional knowledge, the general public sometimes could not tell if a particular work is of value or not and how to appreciate it best. The critics, with their professional knowledge and extensive research on the subject in line with the artists, can write articles or journals to introduce the background, what the artist tries to convey and how it is conveyed. For instance, when the young kids today first hear the Ode to the Yellow River by Xian Xinghai, a famous Chinese composer, they find it hard to accept since it sounds too strong and tough. The critics' introduction on the background of anti-Japanese war would help them better appreciate its magnificence.

It is the artists to give the society something of lasting value and yet it is the critics who makes the value known by the society, gives impetus to the artists' creation and, furthermore, help the general public appreciate the greatness of the works. Without the critics, the artists can live, but may not so well; the society may still see their value, but possibly not so clearly.
