147.The following appeared in an editorial in a business magazine.

"Although the sales of Whirlwind video games have declined over the past
two years, a recent survey of video-game players suggests that this sales
trend is about to be reversed. The survey asked video-game players what
features they thought were most important in a video game. According to
the survey, players prefer games that provide lifelike graphics, which
require the most up-to-date computers. Whirlwind has just introduced
several such games with an extensive advertising campaign directed at
people 10 to 25 years old, the age-group most likely to play video games.
It follows, then, that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to
increase dramatically in the next few months."

尽管Whirlwind游戏公司的游戏销量在过去两年中下降了,最近一次对于电子游戏玩家的调查显示这种销售趋势可能会逆转。该调查询问游戏玩家对于一个游戏来说他们所认为的最重要特征是什么。根据调查结果,玩家倾向于那些需要最先进的电脑的,具有活灵活现图象的游戏。Whirlwind刚刚面向10-25岁的人群开展了大力的广告活动来推广若干此类游戏,10-25岁是最喜欢玩游戏的年龄层。这说明Whirlwind公司的游戏销量将会在未来几个月中猛增。


In this argument, the arguer concludes that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next few months. To support this statement, the arguer points out that Whirlwind has introduced several games that provide lifelike graphics with an extensive advertising campaign directed to the 10 to 25 age-group. However, this argument is undermined by several fallacies.

In the first place, the arguer fails to take into account other possible factors which might also lead to the decline. It is entirely possible that players are no longer satisfied with the quality of Whirlwind video games, or perhaps the prices of the games are too high for them to buy, or perhaps Whirlwind's after sale service is not as fine as other companies. Even it is possible that there was an economical depression which contributed to the decline. If so, only introducing a new game will do little to increase the sales.

In the next place, the result of the survey is not reliable as it stands. The question of the survey was not directly relevant to the conclusion. Even if players consider lifelike graphics as the most important feature of a video game, it can not ensure that they will necessarily buy such games, and the sales of the company will not necessarily increase. Moreover, the arguer fails to provide any information about the respondents, we are not sure that the number of the respondents is large enough to be representative, and no evidence could indicate that players who are 10 to 25 years old will also prefer such games.

Last but not the least, the assumption that the sales of Whirlwind video games are likely to increase dramatically in the next months is open to doubt. Granted that players of 10 to 25 years old also prefer such games, the arguer fails to convince us that they will necessarily buy such games. Since such games are limited to the most up-to-date computers, many 10 to 25 years old plays do not have these computers, and can not afford to buy one. If it is the case, they will not buy such games. Furthermore, the arguer ignores other features of a video game that will also contribute to the sales, such as sound effect, story line, character design, etc.

In sum, this argument is not convincing as it stands. To better support the assertion, the arguer should explain the reasons of the decline, and he or she must establish a causal relationship between introducing lifelike graphic games and the increase of the sales. In addition, more information about the survey should be provided before we could evaluate the argument.
