Issue48   The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten.

Is there too much emphasis placed upon individuals in the study of history? The speaker believes so. Although I have to concede that without the masses most significant events and trends might have never come into being, it is the famous few who play a crucial role in historical events and deserve our attention.

Admittedly, the role of key individuals can never be neglected. Due to their preeminent talents, charisma, industry, or wisdom, great individuals serve as impetus or leading forces in various events and trends in the long river of history. Take Hitler for instance.  Asides from the disastrous consequences he had brought to the people worldwide, especially the Jews, he rebuilt the Germany after the Depression, turned the demilitarized state into a major military power at the 1930's and 1940's. If not for his dictatorship, what the world will be now would probably be much different form that of ours. Another example is Deng Xiaoping, a prominent political leader in China. During Deng's government, he advocated a series of policies, such as "Four Modernizations" and “Open up Policy" to boost the sagging economy of young China. (问下80年代的中国怎么表达?)The following 1980’s witnessed how those adventurous policies substantially promoted national living standard. Without Deng, it would take a longer time for China to travel on the road of economic recovery in post-Mao period. To be sure, key individuals have accomplished enormously to the major developments in history.

However, although the contributions of the famous few weigh considerably in the eventful history, this is not to say that groups of people lend little to the historical events or trends. Contrarily, it is those forgettable groups whose identities are lost in history that the chief and immediate causes for events in the past. This is nowhere more obvious in the case of the Civil War, often associated with Abraham Lincoln. Though Lincoln is constantly recognized as the leader of Northern states’ opposition against the Southern during the war time, it is the nameless populace that made the war inevitable. At that time, southern states relied heavily on slavery for plantation economy, whereas the northern was busily engaged in the manufacturing industry. Without regard to the divergent life styles and political ideas of ordinary people deriving from the respective economy systems, the Civil War might have never happened. Whatever else might be said, populace serves as the cause of historical events, and they provide the stage for the performance of the key individuals.

Given the indispensable role of the nameless groups in the past events, it seems that the study of history should focus on the masses as much as, if no more than, on key individuals. However, even if historians tend to do so, it is of great difficulty to record people with forgettable identities. After all, however impressive the collective force of people in groups might be, individual contribution of a nameless one usually amounts little to those consequential events. Still take the Civil War as an illustration: I would be hard-pressed to think of the part any individual slave, other than that of countless salves in groups, mattered in the course of emancipation of slavery. Always a nameless individual, seen through the large historical lens, bears little response to the development of the past. As a consequence, more often than not, the attention of historians and scholars moves from the  accessible records of   ordinary people into descriptions of social, economical, or political phenomenon, which is more understandable and meaningful the trifle study of ordinary individuals.

In conclusion, both the powerful names and forgettable people in groups are of crucial significance in the course of history. While the former stimulate or lead the events and trends, the latter are the cause of them. Study of general people in groups, in my final analysis, finds itself in the descriptions of phenomenon and trends in historical records, more intelligible than the trifles of the nameless.

Is there too much emphasis placed upon individuals in the study of history? The speaker believes so. Although I have to concede that without the masses most significant events and trends might have never come into being, it is the famous few who play a crucial role in historical events and deserve our attention.(你的立场好像绞在一起啦!首段你偏重famous few,而你的3个B又好像是在强调the nameless masses,更让人不解的是你在结尾又说both都重要!是这样的吗?要不就改称平衡或者case by case.)

Admittedly, the role of key individuals can never be neglected. Due to their preeminent talents, charisma, industry, or wisdom, great individuals serve as impetus or leading forces in various events and trends in the long river of history. Take Hitler for instance.  Asides from the disastrous consequences he had brought to the people worldwide, especially the Jews, he rebuilt the Germany after the Depression(不是吧?这样写是指美国的大萧条!), turned the demilitarized state into a major military power at the 1930's and 1940's. If not for his dictatorship, what the world will be now would probably be much different form that of ours.(这样用容易引起争议!而且也一定能很好的支持你的论点。) Another example is Deng Xiaoping, a prominent political leader in China. During Deng's government(administration), he advocated a series of policies, such as "Four Modernizations" and “Open up Policy" to boost the sagging economy of young China. (问下80年代的中国怎么表达?China during 1980s?)The following 1980’s witnessed how those adventurous(有贬义!换far-sighted?) policies substantially promoted national living standard. Without Deng, it would take a longer time for China to travel on the road of economic recovery in post-Mao period. To be sure, key individuals have accomplished enormously to the major developments in history.

However, although the contributions of the famous few weigh considerably in the eventful history, this is not to say that groups of people lend little to(重复使用) the historical events or trends. Contrarily, it is those forgettable groups whose identities are lost in history that +are? the chief and immediate causes for events in the past. This is nowhere more obvious in the case of the Civil War, often associated with Abraham Lincoln. Though Lincoln is constantly recognized as the leader of Northern states’ opposition against the Southern during the war time, it is the nameless populace that made the war inevitable(你要说什么?). At that time, southern states relied heavily on slavery for plantation economy, whereas the northern was busily engaged in the manufacturing industry. Without regard to the divergent life styles and political ideas of ordinary people deriving from the respective economy systems, the Civil War might have never happened. Whatever else might be said, populace serves as the cause of historical events, and they provide the stage for the performance of the key individuals.(说the masses的重要性,提经济模式干什么?这个例子没说清楚。好像没跟你的论点挂上!)

Given the indispensable role of the nameless groups in the past events, it seems that the study of history should focus on the masses as much as, if no more than,(赞!) on key individuals. However, even if historians tend to do so, it is of great difficulty to record people with forgettable identities. After all, however(这样用?) impressive the collective force of people in groups might be, individual contribution of a nameless one usually amounts little to those consequential events.(这个after all能解释你的前一句?) Still take the Civil War as an illustration: I(在论证段里面尽量不要用这个!) would be hard-pressed to think of the part any individual slave, other than that of countless salves in groups, mattered in the course of emancipation of slavery.(这句什么意思?) Always a nameless individual, seen through the large historical lens, bears little response to the development of the past. As a consequence, more often than not(赞!), the attention of historians and scholars moves from the  accessible records of   ordinary people into descriptions of social, economical, or political phenomenon, which is more understandable and meaningful the trifle study of ordinary individuals.
