TOPIC:ISSUE 144 - "It is the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.
WORDS:465 TIME:0:59:55 DATE:2006-2-2
It is true that the words of critics largely influence people's impression of the art, however, most times critic is a leader who brings the existed hidden value of art to the world, and it is the artist who creates this greatness of lasting value.
Admittedly, critics influence people's evaluation of art. Different people who have various jobs, interests and styles of life put different emphasis on art. Some of them may have little free time spent on digesting art or have little understanding to(of) art. Thus, critics who evaluate works of art take the responsibility to weight the value of art for people. And people are willing to trust what the critics say. For example, when critics praise Mona Lisa is presented well --her hands are alive, expression is flowing out of the picture and clothes seem can be waving in the wind, people may generally take a look at the picture without much thinking then agree those points as long as the evaluation is not too ridiculous.
However, most times critics are leaders who bring the existed hidden value of the art to the world. Usually common people do not have enough database of knowledge to decide whether a piece of art is good or bad, let along can they exactly find the deep value hidden in the art. For example, sometimes in front of two similar pictures which have sunflowers as their scene --one is nothing special but the other is draw by Van Gogh ;common people may not tell exactly what difference they contain. However, in critics’ eyes, the difference is significant—Van Gogh’s sunflowers betray the artist complex feeling of a long-time depression by the heavy colour. On the other point, as said above, critics have a large influence on people's evaluation of the art. Thus, usually the finding of lasting value of a certain art is relevant to the words of the critics.
In fact, it is the artists who create this greatness of lasting value. The lasting value lies in the art but not the words of the critics. No matter what the critics say, the connotation of the art can not change--the barbarity expressed in the picture will not turn into pity, and the sadness in music will not turn to happiness. We can see this point clearly in the process of the evaluation of Mozart's arts. When he created his music, the critics in that time do not put much concern on them. But the value had born with the music, just waiting for people to find. Then after Mozart’s death, critics retrospect the music, the lasting value was realized. Nevertheless, if Mozart had not created the masterpiece, no aesthetic treasure would leave for critics to comment on.
In sum, although critics play an important part in the finding of lasting value of the art, it is the artists who create the greatness.
