What is the impetus for innovation? An individual or a team? No one can deny the indispensable position of individuals in the process of bringing out innovations, who provide enterprise and unique perception. However, the role of the team cannot be overlooked either.

To begin with, every innovation calls for the enterprise of individuals. What does innovation mean? In my point of view, it means new ideas, methods, and devices, which are completely dissimilar with the traditional ones. Since tradition always represents the authority and the opinions of the majority, saying no really requires courage and confidence. Innovations will never come out of the water if only individuals have the determination to make more progress and breakthroughs. Then a striking example in the field of arts comes to my mind, which is about Beethoven. As one of the greatest composer, Beethoven created symphonies, which were dismissed as literally noises by those who were already accustomed to the predicated harmonies and melodic lengths of Haydn. Though no one understood him, let lone to stand by the side of him; though his ears were able to hear as the ordinary persons, Beethoven held on with his great determinations and inspiring emotions. Another example in the field of science may also illustrate the importance of individual's enterprise for innovation. Copernicus, who advanced the theory that the earth and other planets revolve around the sun, disrupting the Ptolemaic system of astronomy. Attacked by the government, suspected by the mass or even the friends, Copernicus still insisted on his own ideas, because he wanted to struggle with the wrong authority and provided the humans with right theory. In short, but for the outstanding enterprise of individual, innovations would not be brought out under such heavy pressure, at least, they would come out more later.

Furthermore, besides enterprise, individual also provides unique perception to bring fresh air, which is the necessity of innovation. As we all know, new blood is necessary in the process of innovations. It is the different perspectives, comparing to the tradition, that promote the innovation. Those individuals, who have special talents in certain fields or own brilliant understandings, will certainly have the abilities to analyze more thoroughly and see further than the majority. Thus, their perceptions are crucial for the innovation. Take an example in the field of education, which is about the former headmaster of Hyde School. Joseph Gauld put up a completely new theory of teaching and how to cultivate children. He held no belief for SAT scores and high grade-point average, instead, he believed the most consequential goal of school is to instill values and acknowledge the unique potential inside each student. Thanks to the profound insights of Joseph, the whole field of education comes into an innovation, in which people begin to think about the issue of more efficient teaching. Thus, the special perspectives of individual provide the opportunity for innovations, acting as the road sign.

However, the role of the team should not be overlooked, which works out the details of innovations. No one is able to control and complete an innovation just relying on his or her own ability without the assistant of the majority of people. On the one hand, the outstanding individual needs to communicate with others for broader insights. By listening to the opinions, no matter the praising or the criticism, the individual will hold more mature understanding of his or her own innovative perspectives. For instance, in the example talked above, Joseph’s advancing idea of teaching certainly needs the acknowledging of others, especially of the parents. In order to obtain a better outcome of innovation, the involvement of the parents to participate is crucial. On another hand, there are many detailed things to be done after the new ideas putting forth by individuals. Then the important role of team will again be obvious. Everyone will admit the ability of Washington as the commander of the American forces in the revolutionary. However, if there are not so many people struggle at the cost of their lives and families, how can he make success alone? Thus, a harmonious team is the base of success of innovation, which helps the outstanding perspectives of individuals come into true.

In sum, the impetus of innovation comes from not only the enterprise and unique perception of an individual, but also from the detailed work done by the team. Both of the individual and the team are indispensable to innovation, without any one of which, the success will only a dream.
