208"The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
As we known, people's attitudes and interests, as well as social values and ideas, can be detected through certain means by which those inner ideas are expressed. Among those expressions, people's appearance and behaviors are two effective ways in some cases.
Admittedly, the way people look, dress, and act reveals the individual attitudes and interests to some extent. The value people held would be expressed or exposed by some outer elements. When people dress themselves or act in society, their interests and attitudes toward the world or some certain matters would directed or at least influence their way of appearance or behavior consciously or unconsciously. A well-educated man who cares much about his own behaviors may frown when he saw someone spit in the street or smoke in public sites. Also, in the campus, many boys who are crazy about video games such as CS always print the professional words on their T-shirts, as an illustrate of their interests and a sense of their own fellowship. Those phenomena reflect the way their interests or value systems affect the outside expressions.
However, for the individual attitudes cannot directly equal to social values, it is not so convincing to assert that a society's ideas and values can be revealed much by observing the appearance and behavior of its people. And through close scrutiny about the two, behaviors are powerful than appearance in exposing social values comparatively.
Appearance, which reflects the attitudes and values of the majority to some extent, suffers a vital flaw, its instability and vulnerable feature in consistently reflecting social values. The way people look and dress is highly affected by their own career, social status, and even fashion trends. The employers working in offices are asked to wear formal suits when they are at work. So when you enter into an office building, your eyes are immediately sunk into a sea of suits and ties, high-heel shoes and brief cases. On all the faces you can almost catch two appearances: the typical professional smile or a indifferent face. Turning our eyes to school, students and teachers are all forbidden to wear clothes or act too weird, since the formal atmosphere in school where children are cultivated and instructed, but no one could ensure no weird mind and idea existing there. In an extreme case, the appearance is just a mask to hide the real thoughts inside, which may not be accepted by the mass. So, although someone claims that the look and dress are some marks of certain ideas and values, I insist the clue provided by appearance is always dim.
Compared with appearance, people's behaviors exposed much more information of individual or social values and attitudes. In some western countries where friends are used to Dutch treat, while in China and some eastern countries always exists a host or several hosts who would pay for all the charge. The differences between two social systems can also be found in the bus, where young and middle-aged adults tend to give their own seats to babies or the old, as well as handicapped, while those actions to old people would be regarded as discrimination against this group of people. Such typical differences respectively derived from the two deeply rooted value systems. What is more, the change of the way people behaved also indicates the conversion of people’s minds. As the process of globalization, the spread of different cultures, people received the new coming values and compared them with the existing ones at the same time, then choosing their favorite means of behavior. In China the Christmas Day and the traditional Spring Festival are all celebrated, while in other western countries Chinese holidays become popular. Behavior, which is subjected to both value systems and cultures, the latter a special form of the former, is an effective way in detecting hidden social ideas and values.
In conclusion, the effects the appearance and the behavior posed to individual attitudes and social values cannot be denied. But virtually speaking, the way people behave provides much more information than the appearance does, therefore being more effective means in presenting individual, especially social ideas. |
