1 后来人能更客观的评价
2 后来人能更全面的评价
3 当代人能更贴近生动的体会伟大之处
I agree with the speaker that the greatness of individuals can be objectively and thoroughly determined by those who live after them. However, they are not the only persons who are able to make decision on that issue. In my opinion, both contemporaries and later generations are capable of such an evaluation.
In the first place, people who live later than the great figures can make objective evaluation on their precursors' work and achievement. Living in different period of time, they are not influenced by mainstream culture and social pressure at that time, which, for some reasons, may play a vital role in misleading people’s judgment. Therefore, their opinions and ideas can objectively reflect the real value of the great individuals' contribution to society on condition that those people are well skilled at evaluation. For example, Van Gogh, one of the most talent painters in human being's history, could hardly sell even one of his paintings because the style of his works did not meet the mainstream art at that time and failed to favor the dominators, either. However, many years after his death, as people’s view of art developed rapidly, well skilled critics began to realize the latent meaning of his works and soon Van Gogh’s greatness was admitted by the whole society.
In addition, as outside standers, people who live after the great figures can have a thorough view and understanding of their precursors' work. Plenty of record concerning most parts of history of that period of time informs them much of the historical condition and the tendency of history development. Therefore, knowing the later influence of great individuals’ achievement on the advancement of society, descendants can thoroughly decide the value of their work to not only their fellows but also later generations. Since it is often the case that without far-sightedness, contemporaries cannot foresee the future benefit of eminent figures’ accomplishment, later generation's evaluation serves as a necessary supplement or even a correction to the judgment on greatness of individuals.
Admittedly, from certain perspectives, contemporaries who lived in the same era with the marvelous individuals are superior to people live after their era in evaluating the greatness and achievement. For one thing, they have more detailed information of those figures which can be forgotten or discarded by people after a long time but useful to judgment. For another, they can realize the influence of eminent figures more vividly through promotion of media at that time and their own eyes and ears, which provides them with deep understanding of the real meaning and value of great figure's accomplishment to society. For instance, now most of people know about President Lincoln who led the liberty of black slaves but few of them really feel and understand his greatness. If they had the chance to listen to Lincoln's lecture, see his supporters’ behaviors or even talk to him directly, it would greatly help them to evaluate the greatness of him.
To sum up, both contemporaries and those who live later have their advantages in deciding the greatness of individuals. It is true that people who live at the same era can realize the greatness more vividly and directly, but later generations who are free from the influence of mainstream culture and social pressure and have a better understanding of development of history are also able to make objective and thorough decision.
