TOPIC: ISSUE147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
(This composition has been revised one time by jingjing, the current number of words is not valid)
观点:disagree
Is it the truth that tradition and modernization cannot coexist in the modern era? The speaker claims so. As far as I am concerning, the rapid process of modernization do have great impacts on the traditional cultures, values and ideas, nevertheless, we still have no difficulty to find the combination of them in our society. Thus, as my point of view, they are in fact not excluding each other but interlacing and interacting to facilitate the progress of human civilization.
To begin with, I turn to my contention with the statement insofar as tradition, which has been tremendously influence by the process of modernization nowadays, still plays an indispensable role in our lives. Traditions, defined as the previous beliefs, cultures, values, styles of life and crafts, have been handed down from generation to generation. There is no denying that the imparting of traditions is a symbol of the heritance of human civilization. If we put our eyes from the convenience and comfort which were brought by modernization to our traditional cultures, ideas and values, we would not be surprised to discover that the tradition, to a large extent, reflect the generation and evolution of our modern culture and even more, we can predict the tendency of the mainstream culture by studying the old traditions. For the supporting example one needs to look no further than the Chinese traditional festival-Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Day, the former represents the important reunion of the whole family, and the latter, Chinese people celebrate it annually through various ceremonies and rituals such as eating moon-cakes and boating competitions. Apparently, although some of traditions were disappeared with the fleeting time, most of them were preserved by people as a part of valuable and permanent cultural heritance. Consider the modern Olympic game, we can appreciate diversified modern programs such as shooting, swimming and basketball in this global competition, nonetheless, there are many athletic programs been preserved until now, for instance, the porch race and marathon, which were still favored by most of audience all over the world.
Notwithstanding some traditions survive in this modern world, even thriving out of expectation of some sponsors of modernization, we have to acknowledge that the process of modernization indeed, have sharply impacts on them. Simple taking a glance of our routine lives, I bet that you will suddenly find that the world, every corner of it, was significantly changed by the rapid development of high technology and science-supermarket, automobiles, internet, advanced appliance, convenient devices for communication such as the cell phone, telephone and even the GPS-all these products of modernization benefit our human beings greatly. Therefore, I would wager that without the modernization human's lives would turn back to the ancient epoch and all the prosperities created by the modernization would eliminate.
However, we should not overemphasize the significant of modernization while trivializing tradition. iIt is without saying that the prosperity of the modern prosperity depends on the foundation of traditions. From the science angle, though the advanced equipment, high techniques and comprehensive method of experiments brought gigantic convenience to scientists or researchers and successfully lead them to achieve grand accomplishments, they still have to cling to the basic traditional theories such as the Newton theories. Otherwise, from the field of arts, some detractors may argue that , for example, the modern pop music including R&B music, Hip-pop, Rock-and-Roll and so forth have so many conflicts with the classic music. Nonetheless, with the close examination, one would discover that many of modern music has been synthesized by the elements of traditional one-the rhythm, the twelve scale, the melody and tone and etc. and they even spring from them at times.
Therefore, unlike the speaker's allegation, tradition and modernization could not merely exist with each other spontaneously but interact mutually. There is no doubt that their combination is the most effective way to facilitate the progress of human civilization. The modern education which involves the traditional instruction by teachers with the modern instrument of multi-media is the best example to prove this point of view.
To sum up, I contend with the statement on the foundation that tradition imparts human civilization while modernization brought convenience to our lives, each of them interlace together and benefit our human beings. |
