TOPIC: ISSUE 142 - "The well-being of a society is enhanced when many of its people question authority."
WORDS: 686 TIME: 上午 01:01:30 DATE: 2006-2-15
Can the well-being of a society be enhanced as many citizens question authority? And if it is the case, what encumbers reasonable suspicions of the authority? Concerning these complicated issues, fundamentally, I am inclined to claim that rational question of authorities could beneficially improve social development, though improper suspicions might lead to confusion. Moreover, insufficient reasonable question upon authorities should attribute to some factors as follows.
Obviously, logical and rational questions upon authority or long-established theories could, to much extent, modify the defects of these authorities and further enhance the development of the society. As common sense, there is nothing perfect, and ensuing with the steps of progressing history, the former authorities might be no longer suitable for the society. Then bravely questioning authorities of this kind turns out to be not only necessary but also beneficial, or else such authorities will definitely bring about embarrassment on the track of social and scientific advancement. Consider, for example, Galileo discovered law of uniform acceleration of falling bodies just by questioning the theory of Aristotle. It could not be more emphasizing the effect of Galileo's achievement. Simply put, without his discovery, the development of laws of motion might have been delayed by hundreds of years. In other words, Galileo eliminated obstacles of the advancement of physics and enlightened the following scientists such as Newton. Consequently, the well-being of the society would be greatly improved by proper question of authority.
Yet, unfortunately, most people have got used to follow authorities and few could bravely and sagaciously question established authorities. And the reasons for this lie in two aspects as follows. First and foremost, fears or reverences of the authority prevent intelligent individuals from doubt authority. The best illustrating example involves the famous astronomer Bruno that he cost his life to persist in the Sun-centered theory. Under the pressure of middle aged Catholicism, nearly no scientist would go against the power of Catholicism. Even the father of Sun-centered theory-Copernicus published his work at the moment of his death. Therefore, power of darkness severely beats the desire of intelligent individuals to question authority, whereas when there is one pioneer, the society would certainly experiencing drastic "earthquake".
What is more, the lack of advanced knowledge of a certain field might result in the fact that ostensive reasonable but indeed unscientific authority could lead the field for a long period. Ever since people have been considering that environmental pollution should attribute to the abnormality of frogs-many samples of frog have one more but disabled leg. A recent research shows that it is a certain kind of tiny parasite that leads to such abnormality of frogs. However, facing such unknown phenomena, people could not do nothing but to regard approximately relative pollution as the reason for this. And no one could have any debate upon this conclusion as there is no more reasonable explanation for such phenomena. While development of modern science and technology finally reveals the surprising but scientific reason.
In addition, ignorance of questioning authority or taking long established authoritative theory for granted would be another cause that encumbers necessary suspicions. When kind of new phenomena emerge in a blank field, the first to rise ostensive reasonable explanation would be regarded as authority, and in a long period few would question the rationality of his theory. For instance, ever since maneating shark has long been considered as the murder of coach attack affairs and nobody has special desire to question the credibility of such theory, however recent study reveals the reality that maneating shark which lives in deep ocean has less possibility to attack people, and it is whale shark that should be charged for attacking human being. Whereas, has there been sound explanations, people would not be intend to question such theory which has little lose relationship with their daily lives.
In closing , according all the points above, reasonable suspicions upon authorities could provide beneficial support to the well-being of the society, yet to obtain such benefit the society should also encourage people to make such suspicions and, equally importantly, enhance the development of modern science and technology.
