TOPIC:ISSUE 147 - "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."
WORDS:645 TIME:0:39:50 DATE:2006-2-19
提纲:
1.承认作者观点有一定道理
2.传统对现代化的基础作用
3.现代化对传统的促进作用
There is a growing concern about the relationship between tradition and modernization. The speaker asserts that the two are not compatible with the other, and so one must choose between them. Yet, as I see it, the problem is much more complex than what an either-or choice could solve.
Admittedly, with the rapid development of science and technology, increasing conflictions between tradition and modernization have appeared and drawn people's much attention. First, the impact which has been brought about by modernization to traditional values of family life has aroused a lot of controversy. It used to be that women were confined within the houses, doing kinds of housework and breeding the children. In contrast, after the Industry Revolution, more and more women have walked out of their former small space and joined in the society with a much more active image, which has been looked on as wicked by some of the old people. Secondly, the moral standards that have been treasured by our forefathers for hundreds or even thousands of years have been greatly challenged all of a sudden. Teenagers do not unconditionally comply with what their parents say because what the older people thick of as right has always been sarcastically condemned by the people on the TV and the Internet.
However, tradition and modernization do not contradict as seriously as we assume. The two of them have close relationship that has been generated from the nature of them. On the one hand, modernization is generated from tradition and can not make any progress without that basis. Modern science and technology, which are the most apparent sign of modernization, are indeed constructed on the theories that have been established by our predecessors. For example, Einstein's theory of relativity, although seems to be a total overthrow of classical physics, actually includes the basic physical theory of Newton's Law of Movement. Without the premise of traditional science and arts, no really creative accomplishments can be achieved, unless it is agreeable fiction. What is more, to create a better environment for modernization, it is just laws which mainly derive from traditional morality that assure the fair competition. Not being carried out under a healthy circumstance, modernization is highly likely to turn out to be a war without bullets between intellectual minds and will render human society to a pile of cultural ashes.
On the other hand, modernization is also enhancing traditional values and morality. One of these examples is the influence of automation on family relationship. Before the appearance of automation, people do all their work at such low efficiency which took up a lot of time that could be spent with their relatives. Now the progress of automation has made it possible for people to travel between their home and work places in much faster ways. Buses, subways, and even private aeroplanes, all contribute to the increase of time left for interchanging thoughts with their parents, children and spouse. Watching TV together, playing poker games, or just chatting about ordinary things, serve to make them feel much closer and more faithful to the small unit of society. At this age of ever increasing rate of violence, divorce and juvenile delinquency, the strengthening of traditional moralities has taken a more important place than ever before. Although someone who disagrees with my opinion may argue that people actually use the additional spare time to work instead of staying with their relatives, the arguer might overlook another crucial thing that in the old time without automation, people merely had even less time and greater spiritual pressure from all aspects, which made them lose the interest of family communication.
In sum, tradition and modernization are not as contradictory to the other as they seem. While the development of modernization is based on tradition, it accordingly serves to enhance people's recognition of traditional values and moralities. Only by taking an analytical way of thinking for both of them can we acquire a clearer vision of world we live in. |
