TOPIC: ARGUMENT48 - The following appeared in a newspaper article published in the country of Corpora.

"Twenty years ago, one half of all citizens in Corpora met the standards for adequate physical fitness as then defined by the national advisory board on physical fitness. Today, the board says that only one quarter of all citizens are adequately fit and suggests that spending too much time using computers may be the reason. But since overall fitness levels are highest in regions of Corpora where levels of computer ownership are also highest, it is clear that using computers has not made citizens less physically fit. Instead, as shown by this year's unusually low expenditures on fitness-related products and services, the recent decline in the economy is most likely the cause, and fitness levels will improve when the economy does."

The arguer asserts that the reason that the decline of people's physical fitness in Corpora in last two years should be due to the recent decline in the economy rather than the suggested reason that people have spent too much time watching TV. The argument suffers  from a series of flaws.

First, the evidence cited by the arguer that overall fitness levels are highest in regions of Corpora where levels of computer ownership are also highest cannot lend too much support to the conclusion. Without detailed information about the fitness conditions of the regions two years ago, we cannot conclude that the fitness conditions are not influenced by the overuse of computer. It is highly possible that althoug the fitness conditions of the region is higher than other regions, they have declined a lot in the last two years. If so, we cannot conclude that spending too much time using computers do not arouse the decline of fitness conditions of the people. In addtion, the high levels of computer ownership do not necessarily imply that people in the region spend too much time using it. It is highly possible that people in the region are well aware of the danger of spending too much time using computer, so they strictly restrict themselves when using them.

Second, the arguer fails to establish an causal relationship between the unusual low expenditure of people in fitness-related products and services in this year and  the decline of people's overall fitness conditions. The unusual low expenditure of people on fitness-related products or services does not necessarily imply that people are doing less exercise. It is highly possible that people already owned enough products or exercises or they are adopting a simply way of exercise such as jogging or running that does not require too many products. In all, without concrete information to demonstrate that people's low expenditure on fitness-related products actually caused the decline of fitness conditions of people in Corpora, the arguer's conclusion is groundless.

Third, even if the decline of fitness conditions of Corpora is due to the low expenditure on fitness-related products and services, no evidence is provided that it is decline of economy that actually caused it. A lot of facotors may influence the sales of fitness-related products and services. It is highly possible that just becasue many people are spending too much time on computer so they show no interest in purchasing fitness-related products or services.

In conclusion, the argument is undermined by a series of flaws. To support the argument, the arguer has to provide more detailed information between people's fitness conditions and the time that they spend on computers. For us to better evaluate the argument, concrete evidence to demonstrate that the decline in economy caused people's low expenditure on fitness-related products and then people's low expeniture caused the decline of overall fitness conditions of people in Corpora.
