Argument6
The following was written as a part of an application for a small business loan by a group of developers in the city of Monroe.
'A jazz music club in Monroe would be a tremendously profitable enterprise. Currently, the nearest jazz club is 65 miles away; thus, our proposed club, the C Note, would have the local market all to itself. Plus, jazz is extremely popular in Monroe: over 100,000 people attended Monroe's jazz festival last summer, several well-known jazz musicians live in Monroe, and the highest-rated radio program in Monroe is 'Jazz Nightly,' which airs every weeknight Finally, a nationwide study indicates that the typical jazz fan spends close to $1,000 per year on jazz entertainment. It is clear that the C Note cannot help but make money.
提纲:论据一不代表一定盈利
论据二不代表一定喜欢
论据三调查错误
The recommendation endorsed in the argument is that it would be extremely profitable enterprise to company a jazz music club in Monroe. The basis for the recommendation is the fact that there is no jazz club in the nearest 65 miles away and the jazz is tremendously prevailing in Monroe. An additional reason given to support the argument is that there is a nationwide study that indicates the typical jazz fan may spends close 1000 per year on jazz entertainment. However, the recommendation relies on a series of unsubstantiated assumption, which render it unconvincing as it stands
In the first part, relying on a poor assumption the author conclude that the jazz club will prominent the whole market of the Monroe for there is no jazz club in there. However, the author does not provide us enough information about the situation of the local jazz music market. It is entirely possible that the number of the people who like another music, for instance, rock and roll, which is more prevailing in the Monroe, is much lager than that of the jazz. Or perhaps the local people like the jazz music but do like to enjoy which at home rather than in the club. Moreover, it is possible that the Monroe is subjected to a depression of the economy and the local people have no money to spend it on the jazz. Without given these detail information about the market and the local people, the author cannot convince me to accept the conclusion.
In the second part, the evidence the author cited lends little support to the conclusion that jazz is extremely popular in Monroe and to go the jazz club. First, it is entirely possible that the people, attended Monroe's jazz festival last summer which is over 100,000 are all the foreigners, and the Monroe only provide a platform to the jazz festival which may incite the local economy. Second, there is no cause-effect relationship between well-known jazz musicians and the highest-rated radio program that in Monroe. The sole people cannot represent the whole people live in the Monroe. Also, it is entire possible that most of the local people are listening the jazz music at home though the broadcasting rather than go to the club.
In the third part, the author provides no assurances that the nationwide study respondents are representative of the overall group of people who like the jazz music. Also, the number of participants might constitute an insufficiently small sample to draw any conclusions that the typical jazz fan spends close to $1,000 per year on jazz entertainment. In addition, the survey in the nationwide cannot reprehensive of the situation in Monroe. Without such information about the progress and the effectiveness of the report, the author cannot convince me to accept the conclusion.
To sum up, the evidence cited in the argument is vague and incomplete, thus does not lend strong support to the conclusion that the arguer maintains. To better evaluate this argument, we need more information concerning the detail information about the local music market and the extent that the people likeness to the jazz music.
