When I was in high school, one of my art teachers told us that the arts derive from societies. And then it is easy to understand that the art can reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society.

First, the main goal of many artists to create their works is that they want to reveal something about the society. It is well known that everyone in the society need a definition of oneself, and we often get the definition from the society or through the groups in a society. And the artists are considered to be artists because they create arts, just when the works, arts, can be accept by the society, they can get the satisfied definition they want. Take the works of LuXun, the most famous Chinese writer for example. After a careful study of his work, you will find a similar person around you but no only around him to every character in his works. And in his most famous novel “AQ zheng zhuan”, you will feel that LuXun is telling something bad about you, about what you do not want anyone else to know. In other words, the works of LuXun have undoubtedly reveal the otherwise hidden ideas of a society.

What is more, it is clearly that nearly all artists are living in the society, and they will converse with other people in the society more or less. In that case, it is difficult for an artist to create a work but not influenced by the society and reveals something about the society even sometimes the arts just want to create something about them but not others. For example, in the literature, no matter how strange the character is, you can always find something of the character like the persons around us. After all the character is a human, he or she most has something in common with us which can make him to be a human. And the painting, it is true that some paintings are just about the nature but nothing about human in them. However, the painting about nature also can reveal care of the human to the nature. And so are other arts. In other words, the arts always reveal the ideas of a society, no matter what are the goals of the artists for creating them.
  
Finally, the art, like literature, can not only reveal the ideas of a society but also can impulse a society. For example, in about one hundred years ago, when Chinese people were trying their best to struggle for the independence, many works created that time played very important roles in the revolution. When the Chinese were in trouble, it is the beautiful picture in the works gave the people the hope and encouraged they continue to struggle until they got the final success. Those works also play important roles now, too. And I think that is one of the best examples explain that the arts can reveal the impulses of a society.

To sum up, it is possible that the goal of the artists to create arts was not for the revealing ideas or impulses of a society, but the arts can reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society, just as what the speaker asserted.
