It’s irrefutable that television and movies, as sort of mass media, have become so indispensable part of our life that they exert a significant influence on our behaviors. By creating images for people to follow, providing topics for discussion, and making decisions for us, television and movies tremendously change the way we behave and think.
In the first place, fascinating as they are, television and movies create myriad of idols for people, especially teenagers, to imitate. What is shown on the screen can often raise uproar in the audience. A case in point, the show of the American western movies in the 1950s gave rise to a surge of wearing jeans in juveniles, whereas the broadcast of Korean TV series nowadays creates a trend in Chinese girls of decorating themselves with earrings and necklaces. On the other hand, violence and sex, the common topics of mass media, are sometimes mimicked as kind of fashion by teenagers who lack the ability of critical judgment.
Matching the image-creating is that mass media provides a wide rage of topics for discussion. Mass media, by transmitting programs worldwide, binds people together who would otherwise lack the same topic to discuss. We probably cannot forget the time when the movie Titanic was shown, tens of thousands of people, mostly lovers, flooded into cinemas to experience the immortal love, shedding tears for Jack and Rose, and out of the cinema discussing their appreciation, regret, and hope for the love story.
Moreover, mass media offers overwhelming information hard for people to discern so that it makes decisions directly for them. When, for instance, the presidential election is held, every TV shows are filled with the figures, slogans, and criticism of the candidates. People’s ability of critical thinking, as a result, is greatly challenged when facing with so many arguments from critics, lawyers and politicians. To make things simple, most people choose to accept the opinion representing the majority instead of making their own decision.
To sum up, whether you like it or not, television and movies have brought forth both positive and negative effects on our behaviors and way of thinking by creating images, providing topics and making decisions for us.
