The following appeared in a memo from the manager of television station KICK.
'A nationwide survey reveals that a sizeable majority of men would like to see additional sports programs on television. After television station WACK increased its sports broadcasts, its share of the television audience in its viewing area almost doubled. To gain a larger audience share in our area, and thus increase company profits, KICK should also revise its broadcast schedule to include more sports coverage.'

The manager asserts that television station KICK should revise its broadcast schedule to include more sports coverage, in order to gain a large audience share in their area, and thus increase company profits. To support this view, he refers to a nationwide survey and the situation of television station WACK. However, neither the former nor the latter can powerfully back him up.

First of all, the nationwide survey does not indicate that ordinary people are interested in sports programs. It has just reveals that men would like to see additional sports programs, without mentioning their basic living conditions, including ages and careers. Those who have taken part in the survey may be within a certain age range and sports related careers, and are therefore more interested in sports than ordinary men. Even though the result of the survey is reasonable, it has not mentioned women at all, who have been sharing approximately the same number with men. As a result, whether the majority of people would like to see so many sports programs remains a question.

Besides, the situation of WACK does not demonstrate any clear relationships between sports broadcasts and television audience. Admittedly, the sharp increase of television audience has happened after the increase of sports broadcasts. However, no evidence reveals that the latter is a main cause of the former. Do people actually watch these sports programs? Probably most of them watch other programs, like contemporary famous films, perfect series, or attractive news, which have really increased WACK television audience. Hence, the situation of WACK cannot lead to the conclusion that the increase of television audience results from additional sports programs.

Furthermore, even if sports programs are welcomed by ordinary people and especially residents in the area of WACK, the status of KICK is completely unconsidered. Do people in the area of KICK love sports programs? Do they usually watch such programs on television? Without careful study, it is impossible to know whether including more sports coverage will help increase audience share in KICK's area.

In conclusion, whether WACK has acquired profits from increasing sports programs, and whether the majority of people, especially those live in the area of KICK, are interested in such programs, are totally uncertain.  Before all these questioned have been answered, it is impossible to predict profits, and unwise to spend a significant amount of money and time to revise KICK's broadcast schedule.
