Will the absence of rituals and ceremonies decrease people's sense of themselves? I agree that rituals and ceremonies are clear characters of certain culture and are helpful in our process of define the culture and strengthen its people's culture identity .However, there are some rituals and ceremonies of a culture that may be useless in achieving the above goals.
Admittedly, each culture has its distinctive ceremonies and cultures, through which we can understand and know more about it and therefore give out its definition. For example, western people can understand Chinese culture more accurately by studying their traditional festivals, such as Spring Festival. Similarly, eastern people also can acquire lots of information about America's value system, beliefs, even likes and dislikes through its distinctive rituals and ceremonies. On the other hand, when people's talking refers to certain culture, people are more likely to think about its unique rituals and ceremonies first. In a word, ceremonies and rituals have becoming flags of certain cultures, through which the culture's distinctive characters are showed out.
In addition, rituals and ceremonies play an important role in its people endeavor to find their sense of themselves. People devote themselves to such rituals and ceremonies can help them establish a feeling of to which group they belong .In these activities, they exhibit their values, beliefs, wishes. They could find a group of people who have the same intrinsic essences with them, which are expressed by the rituals and ceremonies. All of these people's activities and feelings result in an resonance, which then make people to remember who they were, what they had been, what had happened, and therefore strengthen each people's sense of himself or herself. If these rituals disappeared or become abandoned, people may not feel much about themselves as before. For example, if Chinese people can no longer enjoy their Spring Festival with their families, they may be less likely to find their culture identity, and may fell something lost in their lives. This is the same to many other cultures.
On the other hand, there are many other ceremonies and rituals of a culture which contribute less in achieving the same objectives mentioned above. We can find this is more common when we refer to the old rituals. For instance, one old ritual in China requires woman to keep the size of their foot as little as possible; some old tribes in African have the custom to kill people to show their respect to deity. Though these rituals were once popular in their culture, they can hardly strengthen people’s feeling of themselves. They were only false cognition to the nature or people themselves. Thus these rituals disappeared or become abandoned with the developing of human beings. And this process itself can be regarded as a kind of progress of a culture.
In sum, rituals and ceremonies are important for a culture, they can help us a lot when we try to obtain more about the culture or when people who belong to the culture try to find their sense of themselves. Yet there are still some rituals and ceremonies cannot be as meaningful as others due to they are results of ignorance and fatuity and therefore disappeared with time passing by. |
