"Over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past, we should take advantage of this work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such as paper, pens, and staplers. With these changes, our office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of our stores."

The sample range and comparison were ignored in the survey, so how could it support the result of Valu-Mart should store the stock of home office things? The survey told us over 70 percent of the respondents reported that they are required to take more work home than before. Did the survey take all the samples from the surrounding of all Valu-Mart stores? Can the requirement of these respondents be accepted at last? Even more, is 70 percent a higher rate than before, or lower? Without deeply investigating these questions, stocking more office supply things is a big risk for Valu-Mart as this department has not seen impressive sales in the past.
Even the result of the survey is relevant, can the stores really get much benefits from it? Not many employees need home office machines because they can use them at office hours. While employee use more paper pens and staplers at home, they are using less at office. So it seems equal for the sales of stores’ office department.
What is more, not only clew show the office-supply department could become the most profitable component of stores. Although more benefits are increased because of the trends of using more home office things, we also cannot get the conclusion that it can beat all other department on distribution. Food department, wiring department, and commodity department are always most profitable departments in stores, can Valu-Mart, not an office-supply regie, break normal regulations?
For the reasons mentioned above, it is better for the company and the manager consider the office supplies stock project. Even more, not get the increasing benefit conclusion so impatient.
