TOPIC: ARGUMENT117 - The following is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores.

"Over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past, we should take advantage of this work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such as paper, pens, and staplers. With these changes, our office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of our stores."

In this memo, the manager wants to testify the relationship between increasing stocks of office supplies and the rising of its future profit. Since the trending revealed by the survey suggest the expanding need of home office machines, to add the stock of them at all Valu-Mart stores should definitely enlarge the profit. However, any thoughtful man will find several flaws in this deduction.

The most fundamental assumption the author base his argument on is the increasing need of home office supplies like printers, small copy machines, and so on. And the only supporter of this assumption is the survey which merely predicts the trend of working at home. As no further information about the survey is given, one could hardly deduce the former from the latter. If don't know the entire sample number and the choosing measure, the 70 percent of the respondents above may have little value in predicting the trend in the whole region, and so may have little use for testify the enhancing demand. Even if the trend is true, the author shows no concrete evidence that could build the relationship between the assumption and the survey, for the trend may help the instruction of electronic office in which workers need no traditional office supplies at all.

Another flaw that weakens this argument is that the author simply assumes the increasing stock will be the efficient measure to raise the profit of office supply department. As common sense, the stock, if the products have not already sold out, would have nothing to do with the selling amount. If the storage is not the bottleneck, if the selling method or the diversity of products are the essencial problems that stagnate the development, how could increasing the stocks be the right way to take the advantage of this work-at-home trend? Without knowing the exact potential need, without regarding the deep reasons why this department has not performed well in the past, take the managers method blindly would lead to nothing but waste.

Last but not least, the author fails to notice the differences among the separated Valu-Mart stores. To keep sufficient diversity to fit the specific needs of different locations may be the better way to help them vigorous, rather than act as a whole. In the communities which there are increasing work-at-home clerks, focusing on the trend and emphasize the office-supply market would be a good way, while in other communities that would be a disaster for the stores inside it. Clarify the potential consumers and make separated strategies would help the stores to keep profitable.

As a conclusion, this memo is filled with vague, oversimplified and unwarranted assumptions. To make a better recommendation, the author needs to give more information about the survey and find efficient but specific ways for different stores.
