yuvi ----> ylwang
TOPIC: ISSUE136 - "The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare."
WORDS: 575 TIME: 0:45:00 DATE: 2006-6-10
The speaker asserts in the title statement that the absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare. However, the answer of whether there are choices is always changing when we proceed on a matter, such as personal developments, technical issues, and wars in battle fields. At the early stage of the matter, there are always many choices, but at the later stage, choices will become rare.(我觉得开头的最后一句话写的甚为模糊,是以什么为根据,来分别early stage和later stage的呢? 。)
In the first place, consider the personal development of a child.(呵呵,这样TS会不会太省事了点??) When the child is very young, before his school age, we can say the child has lots of choices of his/her future, to be an athlete, a politician, a scientist, a doctor, a company executive, a musician, a painter, a soldier, and so forth. However, with the accretion of her/his age, choices will shrink dramatically 会吗?)to some extent. When he/she enter an university with studying the major of computer science, we can hardly predict that he can become a professional athlete, a doctor, or a soldier. Of course, someone would argue that there is still some possibility that the child can do any jobs as we firstly mentioned, yet it is obvious that the possibility of doing some jobs is much lower after his/her bounding to the major of computer science than in his preschool age, which means choices are becoming rare.(恩,例子和论证都比较平实,但是也都比较在理。感觉这样的内容会很好发挥的) Thereby, life is always like an ant climbing a high tree, in which when the ant go ahead on one branch, it can hardly turn back to other parallel branches.
In the second place, in high-tech companies, the decision of technical configurations at the early stage of a project is of vital importance. For example, when IBM company started its operation system software project OS370, the administration panel selected an unstructured programming language as its development dependent environment, after choosing from lots of programming languages, both unstructured and structured(不好意思,这里我实在不能理解both unstructured and structured? However, as the project OS370 proceeded to its middle stage, lots of problems which twisted with each other were poped up, due to the selected unstructured language, making numerous system analysts, software developer, software testers feel themselves in a deep, dark and dirty lair.(我觉得ylwang论证的最大优点是可以把每个例子分析得非常详细透彻,这一点是我们大部分人缺乏的。。) Finally, the project OS370 had to be aborted and announced as a failure. The reason behind such a phenomenon is(这里是经典句型) that with the proceeding of a technical project, to change original decisions will encounter amounts of difficulties and lead to many complaints because once people are habituated to one thing, their minds can hardly be changed to another choice.(我觉得总结有点牵强了,前面说的大部分都是决定在科技产品的早期有非常重要的地位,后面这一句说的还是如果改变早期决定会产生困难和矛盾,但是要硬扯上人们适应一种事物,要改变很难,觉得有点牵强。 。)
Last but not the least, in battle fields, early decisions are so crucial that they are relevant to tens of thousands of soldier's precious lives, while later choices are merely one thing--failure of victory. (恩,后面两个TS都写得比第一个好)For example, in the world war two(开头字母大写哈), when Japanese invaded China, a famous warfare--Shanghai warfare was hold in Shanghai city in 1937, in which the Chinese army's commander's fatal early mistake that he didn't choose a main force to defense Shanghai's port to Changjiang(说yangzi river MS老外比较懂是什么东东) River, but select a weak local troop to complete such a difficult commission, led to the lost of Shanghai City, by first losing the river port under super pressure of Japanese main force's strong assaults. When the Chinese commonder (commander )were aware of his mistake, nothing could be done other than to wait the failure. That affair implies that an unsuitable early choice of even very little things in a war, can result in completely different situations in the later war, in which then commanders will have few choices.(还是同一个疑问,这几个分论点,我觉得除了第1个展开的完全切合题意,第2和3观点好象在结尾的时候都比较牵强。。
In sum, by the discussions above, we can safely come to a conclusion that in the early stage of most matters, there are large amounts of inducing choices, yet in the later stage, choices will become rarer and rarer.(看到这里我还是不能完全信服你的观点) In this way, everyone should be careful to conduct his/her early decisions.(这里又引出新的观点?
