The speaker claims that compared to critic, artist has the power of making something valuable forever. To some extent the speaker overstates the influence from artist. On balance, however, I tend to agree with the speaker. Although criticism serves to make the works of artists famous and popular, it also distorts the essence of works and devaluates their social meanings.

Firstly, critic may devalue and distort artists’ works. The evaluations and criticisms which reflect critics’ opinions are so subjective that some good qualities are ignored or treated irrationally. Take da van ci code for example, our media gave this movie more criticisms and emphasize exclusively on its bad influence. Because of that, some people refuse to see this movie. Objectively, although this movie is concerned with the power of Jesus, the plots are designed skillfully and the actors performed well from which may prove that this movie is a good one.  

Secondly, critics with limited knowledge can hardly describe the works accurately and may disturb the people’s judgments. Criticisms generally ignore or have no idea about the essence of works. Maybe a piece of work produced under a complex situation shows special meanings for that period. The critics may explain the style of this work in an opposite way. Maybe works contain some meanings unknown which may not be interpreted that exactly.

Nevertheless, critic may also make artist well known. A fair and objective criticism improves artist’s reputation and publicizes the value of works in every corner of society. By doing these, critic provide artist an opportunity to be popular and be recognized by the whole society. More over, some critic can correct something wrong in people’s minds and provide them another way to review the same work.

In sum, I agree with the speaker insofar that artist make contribute to the development of society and make something lasting value. I also agree that critics have their own responsibilities to improve and correct something. By doing that, our society may develop harmoniously.
