TOPIC: ARGUMENT145 - A new study collected data that shows that people who snore are more likely to gain weight than are people who do not snore. It is well known that many people who snore also stop breathing frequently during the night for a few seconds, a condition called sleep apnea. The interruption of breathing wakes the person-often so briefly that the waking goes unnoticed-and can leave the person too tired during the day to exercise. Anyone who snores, therefore, should try to eat less than the average person and to exercise more.

(1)研究中存在问题:是否具有代表性、没有打鼾和非打鼾者体重的比较;
(2)没有提供足够证据表明疲劳是由于晚上睡眠中断;
(3)即使结论成立,也不能推广到所有打鼾者。
At first glance, the arguer's view seems to be quite sound. According to his conclusion,people who are susceptable to snor should eat less and do more exercises than average person. If we take a careful consideration of his evidence,doubt will be cast on the conclusion and apprehension will be heaped on the futere of the practice.
Firsly, the study is open to doubt. The arguer failed to tell us how the stduy was conducted and how well it can represent of all snorers.As we know, when someone wants to claim a generalization from a sole case, the samples of the case should be large and randomness enough to represent of the whole. Unfortunately, in this argument we can not find any sign of this procedure. If the samples happen to be seleced from a group of fatters, the result of the study lends no support to the conclusion. Furthermore, the accuracy of the data is still leaving questioned. The information of the comparision concerning about the average weight between the snorers and others is not avilable in the argument. Without sweeping out questions discussed above ,the arguer can not warrant the validaty of the conclusion according to the study.
Secondly, the author did not offer sufficient evidence to convince us that the interruption of the breathing arttributes to the tied during the day to exercises. Common sense tells us ,there are many other factors resulting to tiredness, such as constitution, mood, or high presure from job. It is especially true when a person continues to working for a long time, he will definitely feel very tied regardless whether he snors or not during sleeping. Howerer, this scenario is highly happened in ordinary life. Without ruling out the alternative explainations, we can not accept the conclusion justifiably.
Last but not the least, even if the snorer have more tendency to be fat than who does not snor, it is not follow that anyone who snores should est less and do more exercises. In the argument , the intention of the advice is seeming to fatter snorers. Howerve, the conclusion draw by the arguer gives a mislead advice to all snorers. Given that someone in good weight who are prone to snore put the advice into practice, it might do great harm to his or her health for less eating and more exercises. What's more, though the snorers are more likely to gain weight, it does not necessary for them to lose weight. Pheraps some of them are satisified with their corrent situation without plan to lose weight. Unless the arguer can provide serious consequence of the snoring to support his conclusion, can the snorers believe him and accept his suggestion.
In sum, to strengthen the argument, the auther should do more detailed investigation and offer more compelling evidence to support his conlusion that less eat and more exercises will help snorers keep fit without out side effect in the long run. |
