提纲ARGUMENT141 - The following appeared in a newsletter distributed at a recent political rally.
"Over the past year, the Consolidated Copper Company (CCC) has purchased over one million square miles of land in the tropical nation of West Fredonia. Mining copper on this land will inevitably result in pollution and environmental disaster, since West Fredonia is home to several endangered animal species. But such disaster can be prevented if consumers simply refuse to purchase products that are made with CCC's copper until the company abandons its mining plans."
The arguer recommends that the CCC will pollute the land of West Fredonia and only when consumers refuse to purchase products that made with CCC's copper will make the company abandons its mining plans and stop the pollution. To support this recommendation the arguer cites the fact that since West Fredonia is home to several endangered animal species and mining cooper on this land will inevitably result in pollution. This argument has several logical flaws.
First, no information shows that CCC will bring pollution and environment disaster in the tropical nation of West Fredonia. CCC completely can take some measures to avoid the pollutions such as insulate or relatively reduce the area of mining.
Second, even if CCC can really bring the pollution and disaster, the arguer aggrandize the effect of the boycott and think that this action is the only way to make CCC abandon its mining plans, however, people can take other measures to prevent such damage.
Third, the arguer ignores the possible fact that there may be other company which mine cooper in the land, therefore if the boycott to CCC’s products is needed and took into effect, the pollution and damage in West Fredonia is still exist.
In sum, the argument is wholly unpersuasive as it stands. To bolster it the arguer should offer the information that CCC will inevitably lead to the pollution in the tropical nation of West Fredonia and the extinction of the endangered animals, moreover, the arguer should prove the boycott is really needed and effective.
